{"id":227739,"date":"2020-09-18T23:27:13","date_gmt":"2020-09-19T03:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=227739"},"modified":"2020-09-18T23:27:13","modified_gmt":"2020-09-19T03:27:13","slug":"cuban-universities-prepare-closure-of-school-year-interrupted-by-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuban-universities-prepare-closure-of-school-year-interrupted-by-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuban universities prepare closure of school year interrupted by pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuban universities are preparing to close the 2019-2020 school year, interrupted by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pandemic and resumed this September in the country, except in the territories affected by the current outbreak of the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuban Minister of Higher Education Jos\u00e9 Ram\u00f3n Saborido affirmed that the priority is to finish the completion of studies before October 30 and close the academic year in all universities \u201cbefore the end of December,\u201d the official newspaper <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granma<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.granma.cu\/mundo\/2020-09-17\/universidades-cubanas-aspiran-a-concluir-en-diciembre-el-curso-academico-2019-2020-17-09-2020-11-09-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a videoconference exchange with the rectors of the universities and the general directors of the entities of Science, Technology and Innovation, the minister said that to meet this objective in the current conditions it was necessary to \u201capply all possible variants that allow for the readjustment of the curricular design and guarantee that this process is carried out with quality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following this logic, thesis discussions of the University of Havana (UH)\u2015which has not resumed its activities due to the pandemic\u2015 have been held in the provinces of residence of the graduates. An example of this are the final exercises of students of the Faculty of Chemistry of the UH before academic tribunals of Matanzas, the <em>Agencia Cubana de Noticias<\/em> news agency <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acn.cu\/cuba\/70188-universidad-de-la-habana-traslada-a-matanzas-discusion-de-trabajos-de-diploma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the agency, given the exceptional situation that Cuba is experiencing due to COVID-19, universities have adopted initiatives to discuss diploma works such as videoconferences through social networks, and the creation of tribunals with the support of other educational centers.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Rr1AScrZKR\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/cuba-pospone-ejercicios-de-tesis-hasta-que-la-situacion-epidemiologica-lo-permita\/\">Cuba pospone ejercicios de tesis \u201chasta que la situaci\u00f3n epidemiol\u00f3gica lo permita\u201d<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abCuba pospone ejercicios de tesis \u201chasta que la situaci\u00f3n epidemiol\u00f3gica lo permita\u201d\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/cuba-pospone-ejercicios-de-tesis-hasta-que-la-situacion-epidemiologica-lo-permita\/embed\/#?secret=VLP6N8jmo9#?secret=Rr1AScrZKR\" data-secret=\"Rr1AScrZKR\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding the preparation of 12th grade students for the entrance exams to higher education, Saborido explained that students from 12 Cuban provinces, which constitute 67.3% of applicants on the island, will present these exams which are scheduled for October 9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cited by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the minister confirmed that at the moment the students from Havana, Artemisa, Matanzas and Ciego de \u00c1vila are left out, for whom \u201ca deferred call will be made when epidemiological conditions allow it,\u201d the source indicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saborido called on the rectors and directors of Cuban higher education to \u201cthink and work more unitedly in the groups, to guarantee a new curricular design with a view to the next school year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On March 23, the suspension of undergraduate and graduate university activities for the 2019-2020 school year was announced, due to COVID-19, and shortly after, on April 10, Saborido announced that the completion of studies exercises remained postponed until the health situation on the island improves.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cuban universities are preparing to close the 2019-2020 school year, interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic and resumed this September in the country, except in the territories affected by the current outbreak of the disease.
