Professor Carlos Lazo<\/span><\/a>, one of the most active defenders of the rapprochement between Cuba and the United States within the Cuban community in the northern country, launched a petition to Democratic candidate <\/span>Joe Biden<\/span><\/a> to \u201crepeal the sanctions that weigh on the Cuban people\u201d if he were to win the presidency.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the petition, published on social networks and <\/span>on the site of his project<\/span><\/a> for both countries, called \u201cPuentes de Amor\u201d (Bridges of Love), Lazo invites everyone who agrees with it to sign the initiative, and conveys the wish to Biden of \u201cAmericans, Cubans, and people of various political and religious creeds from around the world\u201d for Washington to \u201cestablish compassionate and humane policies towards Cuba.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In substantiating his request, the Seattle-based professor, who has traveled to the island several times with his senior high students in recent years, explains to Obama\u2019s former vice president that \u201cat this very moment, innocent people lack food and medicine in that small and impoverished country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThose people, Mr. Biden,\u201d he writes to the Democratic candidate, \u201care not statistics, but men, women, children and the elderly. They are real human beings. They are our families.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, Lazo tells Biden that, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, he launched a similar petition to President Trump \u201cto ease the sanctions on Cuba,\u201d which was supported by thousands of people, and that he <\/span>later pedaled<\/span><\/a> from Seattle to Washington DC to take his demand there.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut,\u201d he says, \u201cTrump did not listen to us. Far from it, he promoted hunger and hardship in the midst of the pandemic and tightened the rope around our brothers\u2019 and sisters\u2019 necks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On that occasion, Lazo also wrote a letter to Biden in which, like Trump\u2019s, he asked for \u201crespect and love for Cuba.\u201d In his letter, he referred to the \u201cgeneral cry\u201d for \u201clove to prevail and that this time of confrontation between our countries end,\u201d endorsed by the more than 20,000 signatures received for his first petition.<\/span><\/p>\n
