
{"id":230060,"date":"2020-11-07T09:21:51","date_gmt":"2020-11-07T14:21:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=230060"},"modified":"2020-11-08T17:05:22","modified_gmt":"2020-11-08T22:05:22","slug":"canadians-return-to-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/canadians-return-to-cuba\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadians return to Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba\u2019s premier beach resort, Varadero, disinfected its sun-loungers and reopened to international visitors <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/balneario-de-varadero-listo-para-recibir-turistas-internacionales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in mid October<\/a> as the country tried to lure lockdown-weary tourists to a new post-pandemic reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/economia\/turismo\/arriba-a-cuba-primer-grupo-de-turistas-tras-reapertura-post-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It was not the first resort to relaunch<\/a>. Cuba originally announced it was ready to receive foreign tourists <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-to-open-to-foreign-tourism-on-july-1-but-only-in-its-keys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in early July<\/a>, but the start up didn\u2019t properly get underway until September 4th when an Air Canada flight from Montreal touched down in Jardines del Rey airport in Cayo Coco with 104 Canadians on board.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The airplane\u2019s arrival marked the beginning of phase two of Cuba\u2019s gradual reopening in which international travelers &#8211; most of whom are Canadian &#8211; are able to fly directly to resort islands off the country\u2019s north coast but are not permitted on the Cuban mainland.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike other countries that insist on a 14-day quarantine or ask visitors to produce evidence of a negative Covid-19 test on arrival, Cuba<a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/coronavirus\/viajeros-cubanos-procedentes-de-mexico-dan-negativo-a-coronavirus-en-aereopuerto-de-camaguey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> screens all tourists at the airport free of charge<\/a>. Visitors are then transported directly to a pre-booked hotel where they can take off their masks and savor a vacation with surprisingly few restrictions. With a small international airport, a well-equipped medical clinic and an easy-to-monitor causeway connecting it to the mainland, it was an obvious place to set up the country\u2019s first Covid-free vacation zone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To date, only half a dozen hotels have opened on Cayo Coco, but more will likely follow as demand increases and Cuba enters what is traditionally its high season in mid-November. All Cuban staff on the cayos are screened for Covid-19 before being bussed in to work three-week shifts at the hotels where strict new hygiene standards have been adopted. Staff don masks while at work, but guests are not obliged to wear them outside of airports and transfer buses. New pandemic protocol means \u00e0 la carte menus have replaced the hotel\u2019s traditional all-inclusive buffets. Otherwise, land and water-based excursions are offered as normal, as long as groups don\u2019t leave the cayos. Guests may also rent bicycles or scooters to get around the islands and enjoy musical performances at the resorts in the evenings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, Cayo Coco\u2019s reopening has been largely successful. Flights operated by Air Canada arrive twice a week from Toronto and Montreal and, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gocuba.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba Tourist Board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Canada, no one has yet tested positive for coronavirus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_230063\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-230063\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Royalton_oncuba_ot_1-1024x666-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-230063\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Royalton_oncuba_ot_1-1024x666-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Royalton_oncuba_ot_1-1024x666-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Royalton_oncuba_ot_1-1024x666-1-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Royalton_oncuba_ot_1-1024x666-1-768x500.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Royalton_oncuba_ot_1-1024x666-1-750x488.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-230063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Otmaro Rodr\u00edguez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Other resort openings<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the wake of Cayo Coco, the islands off Villa Clara province and the hotels of Varadero will adopt similar operating measures as they get ready to receive their first flights from Canada in early November.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Varadero, to keep foreign visitors separated from vacationing Cubans, only a dozen hotels at the eastern end of the Hicacos peninsula \u2013 the so-called \u2018zona hotelera\u2019 &#8211; will be open to international tourists. Visitors will also have access to two of Varadero\u2019s marinas and the Plaza Am\u00e9rica shopping mall.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are still no concrete reopening dates for the resort areas of Guardalavaca in Holgu\u00edn province or Playa Santa Luc\u00eda in Camag\u00fcey. By the late 2010s <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/economy\/tourism-in-cuba\/pandemic-elections-and-travel-between-cuba-and-the-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">around 1.1 million Canadians were visiting Cuba annually<\/a> \u2013 over a quarter of all tourist arrivals \u2013 and contributing significantly to the country\u2019s economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cordial relations between the two nations and the relatively short three-hour flying time from Toronto has led to a quick renewal of Cuba-Canada bonds post-pandemic compared to other countries.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National carrier, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vacations.aircanada.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resumed flights from Ontario and Quebec after a six-month gap in September. They will be complemented by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westjet.com\/en-ca\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Westjet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in early November and low-cost airlines, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunwing.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunwing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transat.com\/en-CA?search=package&amp;origin=YUL&amp;dest=Country-CU&amp;date=2020-11-03&amp;duration=3-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air Transat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in early December. A brand-new Canadian airline called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/owg.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OWG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an acronym for Off We Go) is also due to launch flights between Canada and Cuba this winter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under Cuba\u2019s new protocols all trips must be pre-booked in a vacation \u2018package\u2019 that includes flight and accommodation. It is currently not possible to turn up in Cuba without a hotel booking. Most operators offer special Covid-19 medical insurance as part of the package.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_230065\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-230065\" style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/unnamed-47.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-230065\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/unnamed-47.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/unnamed-47.jpg 512w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/unnamed-47-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-230065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: 5 de septiembre.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Cuba\u2019s next moves<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, in Cuba, the government announced a comprehensive plan to return to a \u2018new normal\u2019 on October 9th aimed at protecting public health while, at the same time, rebooting the struggling economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an encouraging nod to tourism \u2013 which makes up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hosteltur.com\/130649_cuba-cerrara-el-ano-con-43-millones-de-turistas-un-85-menos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10% of Cuba\u2019s GDP<\/a> &#8211; the proposals include restarting several more of the country\u2019s provincial airports and the gradual reopening of the rest of the country. <\/span>Russian airline, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aeroflot.com\/ru-en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aeroflot<\/a> and German charter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.condor.com\/eu\/flights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Condor<\/a> were quick to respond to the changes saying they would re-establish flights to Cayo Coco and Varadero respectively starting in early November. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2020-10-08\/participaran-presidente-y-primer-ministro-de-cuba-en-la-mesa-redonda-08-10-2020-08-10-06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to Cuban prime-minister, Manuel Marrero<\/a>, all visitors from abroad will continue to be screened for Covid-19 and will have to sign a sworn declaration of good health on arrival. Outside of tourist resorts, masks remain mandatory for Cuba\u2019s indoor spaces.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Havana, which has endured tougher Covid-19 restrictions than other parts of Cuba, is not included in the next round of airport re-openings. However, some companies, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Airlines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have already started taking flight bookings for the city\u2019s Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed International Airport for late November.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>New restrictions for Americans<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Canadians are beginning to head tentatively back to Cuba, travel for Americans recently became more difficult. <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/u-s-prohibits-americans-from-using-tourist-facilities-owned-by-cuban-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New restrictions<\/a> announced by the Trump administration on September 24th, 2020, bar US citizens from staying in any state-run <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/cuba-restricted-list\/list-of-restricted-entities-and-subentities-associated-with-cuba-effective-september-29-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hotel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, prohibit the import of Cuban rum and cigars, and have eradicated two of the 12 categories of authorized travel to the country.
