The Director General for the United States of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX), <\/span>Carlos Fern\u00e1ndez de Coss\u00edo<\/span><\/a>, intervened this Monday night in the prime-time broadcast of the National Television News (NTV<\/em>) to reiterate the official position in relation to the San Isidro events and the involvement of the U.S. government.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two days earlier, on November 28, the MINREX had called U.S. Charge d\u2019Affaires Timothy Z\u00fa\u00f1iga-Brown to let him know that Cuba did not allow \u201cthe United States, or any state, to interfere in the internal affairs of the country.\u201d He was also asked to reiterate that same message to the Department of State. \u201cThe officials do not act on their own initiative,\u201d Fern\u00e1ndez de Coss\u00edo told the NTV<\/em>, \u201cthey receive instructions from their government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe summoned him to the MINREX,\u201d he said, \u201cbecause we had the need to remind him that U.S. diplomats must behave and not meddle in internal affairs. The Vienna Convention establishes very clearly that the diplomatic representative\u2026is obliged to respect the laws and regulations of the country\u2026and not to interfere in the internal affairs of a country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He also said that Z\u00fa\u00f1iga-Brown had gone three times to San Isidro, a place where the Embassy knew that a political and social provocation was taking place with the purpose of destabilization. And that he had done it to personally support those who were flouting health regulations against the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

He described the events as \u201cthe San Isidro farse.\u201d They are, he said, \u201cto some extent a product of the United States\u2019 subversive activity in Cuba.\u201d He specified that the charge d\u2019affaires also called its protagonists \u201ccolleagues,\u201d but that there is a relationship of dependency: on the island, he stressed, \u201cthere have always been people willing to submit or subordinate themselves to those who pay them\u201d for undertaking activities against the government. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), he said, \u201cknows who are the individuals who give the money to pay for these services,\u201d but that \u201cthe United States is a government that is complicit and tolerant of terrorist activities directed from its territory against Cuba.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, he highlighted that these events describe a sequence in which, first, social networks intervene, magnifying everything; afterwards, what is sought is that \u201cthe supposed great incident or crisis is recognized by the mainstream press\u201d and that, finally, \u201cgovernments or international institutions are contacted to recognize it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
