{"id":233228,"date":"2021-01-17T07:15:14","date_gmt":"2021-01-17T12:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=233228"},"modified":"2021-01-17T07:15:14","modified_gmt":"2021-01-17T12:15:14","slug":"felito-lahera-im-very-cuban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/felito-lahera-im-very-cuban\/","title":{"rendered":"Felito Lahera: \u201cI\u2019m very Cuban\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Characters like Andoba (Theater on TV), Santos, in the film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barrio Cuba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Captain Mayito, in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kangamba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the controversial Yassel, who we can see again these days in the soap opera <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La cara oculta de la luna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, made Rafael (Felito) Lahera one of the most beloved faces of the Cuban audience just over a decade ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among so many characters that he has played throughout his career, he confesses to <\/span><b>OnCuba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that he makes no distinctions: \u201cI prefer them all, I like to read the character, whoever it is and say let\u2019s go, it\u2019s time to work magic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After several years working in Colombia and currently residing in the United States, Lahera has reconnected with work on the island, this time in cinema, with totally different characters from each other. That is proof of the versatility of this actor, who confesses that he \u201cmisses a lot,\u201d on a personal and professional level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the distance and the circumstances in which the planet is living due to COVID-19, the dialogue with this \u201cvery Cuban\u201d guy, as he defines himself, is held at a distance, calmly and without the fuss of the beloved character Ca\u00edn Ca\u00ed, which he played in the children\u2019s television space <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dando vueltas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rafael Lahera actor Cubano radicado en Colombia\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F6o94CH1a7s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding that program, Lahera affirms that he went reluctantly, at the request of the director of the space, Lilo Vilaplana: \u201cLilo, who was a friend of mine, gave me a lot of freedom with the character. Rita del Prado wrote the song. I didn\u2019t imagine the acceptance it had. Cain Cai is one of the characters that I love the most, so much so that I still have the wig and clothes I wore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Principe De La Bulla\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cThP7KGP-hA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much importance do you give to the movement of amateur artists of which you were a part?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A great deal. To a certain extent I was part of that movement. Being an extra and a double, I joined a group that was full of people who later became figures, such as Jorge Luis de Cabo and Rosendo, who went on to the musical genre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, already in the Army of Working Youth (EJT), I got an acting award, together with Ricardo Acosta, who today is a star editor. Under the direction of Miguel Navarro, then I went to the festival of the Armed Forces (FAR). I always respected amateur work; many of our great actors come from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you remember those first experiences?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were wonderful. We were crazies with a great desire to work and learn. I started in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adventures<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> space and the preparation of the actors was admirable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today many from that group are friends, despite the distance and the years. Actors who I \u201cdoubled\u201d later were my stage partners. That in itself is a big prize, I learned everything and from everyone during that stage, it was hard, but rewarding. Foto: Cortes\u00eda de la productora, Claudia Olivera.\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cAgosto.\u201d Photo: Courtesy of producer Claudia Olivera.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I started on TV when I was working on an adventure with Erick Kaupp. The Chino Chiong took me to Arte Popular and there I started in professional theater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me it was the academy: I met and worked with people who had a fascinating theatrical history, together with recent graduates and others from the amateur movement, all under the baton of Eugenio Hern\u00e1ndez Espinosa. And yes, I miss the stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you deal with popularity?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there is ever a difficult audience, it\u2019s the children, because of their sincerity. I had already been through that experience and many of my fans today have been so from when they were children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One works for the public and if there are sometimes insolent or disrespectful people, you have to learn to deal with that based on respect and decency. Otherwise, dedicate yourself to something else. This is why the public has always been El Respectable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then came the experience abroad&#8230;.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I arrived in Colombia literally with my tail between my legs.\u2026 I had the luck that my friends were already there. I was welcomed into their home by Tahimi Alvari\u00f1o and B\u00e1rbaro Mar\u00edn, Abel Rodr\u00edguez, Ulises Gonz\u00e1les, Caleb Casas, Mijail Mulkay, Jaquelin Arenal, Felix Antequera, Alberto Pujols, Patricio Wood, Laura Ramos, Katia del Pino, Ariel Betancourt.\u2026 They all made me wipe away the nostalgia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also learned a lot, I was received with great respect and affection. Colombia has not only actors of an incalculable level; it has a solid industry and an enviable professionalism, from which I drank all I could and was left wanting. I love Colombia, its culture and its people and I miss it too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/cine\/despues-de-agosto\/<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some time now we have been able to see you again in some national film productions.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armando Cap\u00f3 visited me in Miami to talk about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agosto<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The proposal came from Kiki \u00c1lvarez and Cap\u00f3 was not very convinced. After the interview, he gave me the character.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later in Cuba, Blanca Rosa called me for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Regreso<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These are experiences that I am infinitely grateful to the two productions, which had to work magic so that in that short time I could make both films. In a way, it was my return to Cuban cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Mayor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when I was working in it, at ICAIC, Miguel Ginarte, who is like an adoptive father to me, tells me \u201cRigoberto wants to see you, go to his office.\u201d I went there and Alderete and I we came out with the script, we were the first to receive it, a year before we started filming. Has that life as an immigrant actor been difficult?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For someone who had some success after years of trying, it\u2019s very hard. I\u2019m very Cuban; I miss my friends, colleagues and the neighborhood.
