{"id":233420,"date":"2021-01-21T11:45:44","date_gmt":"2021-01-21T16:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=233420"},"modified":"2021-01-21T11:45:44","modified_gmt":"2021-01-21T16:45:44","slug":"coronavirus-cuba-will-produce-100-million-doses-of-its-soberana-02-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/coronavirus-cuba-will-produce-100-million-doses-of-its-soberana-02-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"Coronavirus: Cuba will produce 100 million doses of its Soberana 02 vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba will produce this year 100 million doses of its Soberana 02 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/vacuna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccine against the new coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to meet its own demand and that of other countries, a leading scientist reported this Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are reorganizing our productive capacities because we really have a lot of demand for the vaccine and we have to prepare ourselves,\u201d the director of the Finlay Institute, Vicente V\u00e9rez, confirmed to a group of journalists at a conference which included a tour of the laboratory that manufactures the drug against COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Finaly Institute created Soberana 02 and Soberana 01, the latter in a less advanced research phase. En total se vacunar\u00e1n alrededor de 900 personas. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0VM4khaBny\">pic.twitter.com\/0VM4khaBny<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Instituto Finlay de Vacunas (@FinlayInstituto) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FinlayInstituto\/status\/1351248776871223300?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 18, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 100 million doses planned would be only of the Soberana 02 and there are already countries interested in acquiring it, such as Vietnam, Iran and Venezuela, among others, with which the island has collaboration agreements, including Pakistan and India, said V\u00e9rez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/avanzan-en-la-habana-estudios-de-la-vacuna-soberana-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week began the second part of a Phase II trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of this product with 900 patients\u2014added to a hundred from the first phase\u2014in a polyclinic in the capital, The Associated Press confirmed the day before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The volunteers\u2014a group of them received a placebo as part of the study, although once it is finished they will be immunized with the real vaccine\u2014said they had not reported discomfort. Some neighbors from the polyclinic even came to volunteer as part of the trial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After being injected, the people\u2014ranging from 19 to 80 years of age\u2014waited in the same polyclinic before returning home and were followed up at 24, 48 and 72 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">V\u00e9rez stressed that the antigen is safe after noting that it does not contain the live virus but parts of it, so\u2014according to the expert\u2014its placement generates immunity but does not cause major reactions and, therefore, does not need extra refrigeration, like other candidates of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Finlay researchers are working with countries such as Italy and Canada to verify the impact of these vaccines\u2014especially Soberana 01\u2014on people who already had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are convalescing but are at risk of reinfection. Likewise, the efficacy is being evaluated in the face of the impact of new mutations such as the one described in Great Britain, Japan or California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the next few weeks, the vaccination will be extended to 150,000 people on the island, V\u00e9rez confirmed, on the way to mass immunization and a test will be carried out in February to protect children with Soberana02, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After several months of keeping the pandemic under control, Cuba suffered an outbreak at the beginning of the year, after the opening of its airports and despite having a preventive health protocol. From March to date, there have been 19,122 infections and 180 deaths on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scientist did not give details of the price the vaccine will have for sale to other countries. In Cuba their placement is free and voluntary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being a small country, Cuba has a developed scientific center that produces almost all the
