Exactly two months after the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/opinion\/columns\/our-life\/last-nights-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">events of 27N<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the protesters who came to the headquarters this Wednesday demanded an institutional response to the arrest of three Cuban artists in the morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fb.watch\/3hvITFS41i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statements to the Periodismo de Barrio site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, today some artists and intellectuals linked to 27N had planned \u201ca very simple gesture, waiting for the anniversary of the birth of Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed and commemorating the two months of 27N, to go somewhere where there was a sculpture of Mart\u00ed and have a poetry reading. Today we woke up and Tania Bruguera and Katherine Bisquet were under surveillance,\u201d said visual artist Camila Lob\u00f3n, present there. According to her, she herself witnessed the arrest of Camila Acosta and she was detained by police officers, who tried to take her cell phone from her. A State Security officer let her go after \u201ctalking to me for about half an hour,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For today, three \u201cspokespersons\u201d: curator Solveig Font, playwright Yunior Garc\u00eda and Camila Lob\u00f3n herself, had a meeting scheduled with Deputy Minister Fernando Rojas at the MINCULT headquarters, after several exchanges between the institution and some participants in the 27N, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=131608298797962&amp;id=107312641227528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement posted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Facebook page 27N.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several of those who were participating in the tribute to Mart\u00ed decided to go to the MINCULT headquarters to demand that the people who had been detained be released. As could be seen in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/930334450364889\/videos\/2925377321017558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">direct<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> broadcast of <em>Periodismo de Barrio<\/em>, Deputy Minister Fernando Rojas invited them several times to enter the Ministry\u2019s headquarters and talk about this situation, which he said he would \u201ctake care of immediately,\u201d but those gathered there decided to remain outside until they had an answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason given by Fernando Rojas was that there should be no crowds with the epidemiological situation on the island, but the attendees decided to remain outside the institution and affirmed that they would keep their distance when doing so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Independent Cuban media <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eltoquecom\/status\/1354500068561334275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">denounced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on social networks the aggression suffered by a journalist from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diario de Cuba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Minister of Culture Alpidio Alonso, who attacked reporter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eltoquecom\/status\/1354500068561334275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mauricio Mendoza<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to take away his cell phone while he was filming outside the headquarters, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/periodibarrio\/status\/1354491349748256770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the published images. After that, the broadcat was abruptly interrupted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few minutes later, the Cuban deputy minister of culture declared on Twitter that he had asked those gathered outside the Ministry\u2019s headquarters to come in to talk and, instead, \u201cthey refused and provoked. There is no official confirmation in this regard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>MINCULT: what happened was a provocation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After this afternoon\u2019s incidents, the MINCULT issued an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cubadebate.cu\/noticias\/2021\/01\/27\/ministerio-de-cultura-no-quieren-dialogo-y-provocan-hasta-el-limite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">official statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which it describes the events as \u201ca provocation\u201d by those gathered, to which the Ministry\u2019s workers responded after several requests for them to withdraw \u201cdue to the risk posed by the COVID-19 epidemic in crowds in public spaces.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the statement, those gathered \u201cwere repeatedly invited to enter the MINCULT headquarters to await the clarification of the situation of some citizens who, according to those who remained outside the institution, had been detained in other places in the city\u201d and \u201cit was also suggested that they talk with all of them on a topic of mutual interest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, \u201cin a frankly irresponsible attitude, those who remained on the street said they would not leave\u201d while \u201cmedia paid by the U.S. government were commenting live on what was happening and reinforcing the provocative atmosphere of the counterrevolutionaries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGiven this circumstance,\u201d points out the MINCULT, \u201cthe workers of the Cuban Ministry of Culture decided to react immediately. They gathered in front of the provocateurs and urged them to withdraw\u201d and \u201cin the face of their refusal, and the obvious intention of materializing a media show, the Ministry\u2019s workers confronted them and evicted them from the place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">El Ministerio de Cultura ratifica su voluntad de di\u00e1logo con los creadores honestos sobre cualquier tema relacionado con la pol\u00edtica cultural de la Revoluci\u00f3n Cubana y reitera su negativa a aceptar provocaciones o a dialogar con mercenarios. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CubaEsCultura?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CubaEsCultura<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jIUTrYFwB3\">pic.twitter.com\/jIUTrYFwB3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; CrearTv Cuba Cultura (@CrearTvCultura) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CrearTvCultura\/status\/1354514257229062145?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 27, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In keeping with this statement, Deputy Minister Fernando Rojas, who had agreed on Wednesday\u2019s meeting with the three spokespersons of the 27N group, affirmed that \u201cit is not possible to reach an agreement for a conversation and in a few hours violate it. This is called provocation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rojas explained that despite the requests to those gathered to withdraw due to the epidemiological situation so that the agreed meeting could be held, \u201cthe refusals and provocations were constant,\u201d even though, he said, he let them know that he was conducting inquiries about the detained people and conditions were created for their stay inside the MINCULT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe truth is that in the face of the latest refusal expressed in very provocative terms and knowing that we had a permanent follow-up of means financed by the U.S. government, and people who don\u2019t want anything good for this country, much less now that it might seem other perspectives are opening up in bilateral relations, the Ministry workers decided, and I think rightly so, that the provocation had to be ended,\u201d Rojas said in statements this afternoon to the foreign press accredited on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asked about the images of physical and verbal confrontations with the gathered people disseminated on the networks, which even involve the Minister of Culture, Rojas pointed out that \u201cwhen there is a situation like the one that occurred here, the risk must be assumed that there will be some pushing around, and we assume it to face a provocation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeveral really upset comrades came out, they stood in front of the provocateurs, they asked them again to leave and, as happens when Cubans heat up, there were shoves, the occasional verbal brawl, there was undoubtedly a more energetic commotion for them to leave and, ultimately, we evicted them from there, that\u2019s the truth,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked about the detentions and other coercive actions denounced by independent artists and opposition activists, today and in previous days, Rojas assured that the MINCULT was interested in examples of this type addressed at the 27N meeting, but he cannot take responsibility in all cases because it is not his competence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI cannot take responsibility for a provocation that doesn\u2019t have to do directly with an issue of dialogue with culture and I cannot make the promise, because it is also not my competence, that the internal organs are not going to act in the face of a provocation, or that the population, the workers, as happened here today, are not going to act in the face of a provocation,\u201d said the deputy minister, who affirmed that this \u201cis an issue that we are willing to continue discussing, but if they don\u2019t let us discuss, how are we going to do it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding the spaces for dialogue between cultural institutions and artists, after the events of 27N and now with the arrival of Democrat Joe Biden to the presidency of the United States, Rojas affirmed that \u201cregardless of the situation, these processes of dialogue, of exchange, of analysis, of self-criticism, of reflection in the union, in the sector, will continue and will deepen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat is going to happen anyway is that we are going to discuss this with artists and writers, everything within the Constitution of the Republic and the cultural policy of the Cuban State,\u201d he added and said that from November until today \u201cwe have had meetings throughout the country on the most diverse, most complex, most difficult subjects, including the monetary reorganization, with thousands of artists. We don\u2019t make a distinction between one segment of artists and others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding the particular exchange with the 27N group, he said that \u201cthe dialogue with that group through its spokespersons has been maintained. It isn\u2019t a simple dialogue, it isn\u2019t an easy dialogue, but we have been willing to have it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding the possibility of such a dialogue after what happened this Wednesday, Rojas affirmed that in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/viceministro-de-cultura-estamos-dispuestos-a-dialogar-con-los-jovenes-salvo-con-los-incorregiblemente-reaccionarios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issued by MINCULT last December 4, \u201cwe made it clear with whom we were not speaking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur rejection has to do with the media financed by U.S. agencies and by the people who receive some kind of already more practical support from the U.S. government. We make that distinction, and by doing so we have tried to maintain the dialogue,\u201d the deputy minister responded to a question from <\/span><b>OnCuba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe that now we will have to see what pronouncement they make, how they react to our proposal, which is very firm, that we will not talk with mercenaries,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd there I adhere to the criterion that not everyone who has an opinion should be qualified, but that also means that whoever has an opinion has to be clear in the sense that what they are raising is an opinion and they aren\u2019t providing a service to those who want to harm us. Therefore, we will be waiting for the reactions, there are already some, there are already manipulations of what happened out here.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe disrespect, the cheap bullying, the impudence and the provocation have to end if we are serious people, and I hope because we are serious people,\u201d he concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deputy minister said that although he acknowledges that among the 27N protesters\u2014of which those gathered this Wednesday were part\u2014there are artists, there are also \u201cmere provocateurs\u201d and artists who behave as provocateurs, who \u201clie and manipulate information.\u201d People who, he said, claim to have \u201cmore interest than us in dialoguing, but don\u2019t show it, don\u2019t put it into practice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he reiterated, citing the statement issued today, that \u201cthe Ministry of Culture ratifies its willingness to dialogue with honest creators on any issue related to the cultural policy of the Cuban Revolution and reiterates its refusal to accept provocations or to dialogue with mercenaries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Around noon on January 27, some 20 people gathered in front of the Cuban Ministry of Culture (MINCULT).
