{"id":234013,"date":"2021-02-02T13:28:56","date_gmt":"2021-02-02T18:28:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=234013"},"modified":"2021-02-02T13:28:56","modified_gmt":"2021-02-02T18:28:56","slug":"u-s-congressmen-request-guantanamo-prison-camp-remain-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/u-s-congressmen-request-guantanamo-prison-camp-remain-open\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. congressmen request Guant\u00e1namo prison camp remain open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nine former military Republican congressmen asked <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/estados-unidos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United States<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to reconsider his plans to close the Guantanamo detention facility, according to what one of them, former \u201cgreen beret\u201d Michael Waltz, representative for Florida, said this Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a letter to Austin, which Waltz posted on his Twitter account, the nine congressmen, \u201cas veterans of the Global War on Terrorism,\u201d point out that they have \u201cserious reservations\u201d about the possibility that the Guant\u00e1namo detention center, located at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/base-naval-de-guantanamo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naval base<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the same name in Cuba, be closed.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, Congressman Waltz sent a letter to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecDef?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SecDef<\/a> urging the Biden Administration to keep GITMO open and the remaining prisoners detained in Guantanamo. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mA8YNlOSeI\">pic.twitter.com\/mA8YNlOSeI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Congressman Waltz Press (@RepWaltzPress) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepWaltzPress\/status\/1356243211363250186?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 1, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin, the first African American to head the Pentagon, said in his written confirmation testimony that he believed it was time to close that detention facility, which today has about 40 inmates, including the masterminds of the September 11, 2001 attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey are people who, in effect, remain at war with the United States,\u201d the congressmen emphasized in their message to Austin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nine signatories of the letter ask him to reconsider his plan and remind him that Barack Obama, who had promised to close the prison for terrorists, when he became President did not do so because his plans collided with \u201cfacts of reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany of us put our lives on the line to prevent these terrorists from ever returning to the battlefield.
