{"id":234866,"date":"2021-02-18T20:04:39","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T01:04:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=234866"},"modified":"2021-02-18T20:04:39","modified_gmt":"2021-02-19T01:04:39","slug":"foreign-minister-cuba-exhibits-major-breakthroughs-and-results-in-the-struggle-against-racism-and-discrimination-although-more-is-yet-to-be-done","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/foreign-minister-cuba-exhibits-major-breakthroughs-and-results-in-the-struggle-against-racism-and-discrimination-although-more-is-yet-to-be-done\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreign Minister: Cuba exhibits \u201cmajor breakthroughs and results in the struggle against racism and discrimination, although more is yet to be done\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodr\u00edguez affirmed this Thursday that Cuba exhibits \u201cmajor breakthroughs and results in the struggle against <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/racismo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">racism<\/a> and discrimination,\u201d but acknowledged that on this sensitive issue \u201cmore is yet to be done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn Cuba, the triumph of the Revolution led to a radical transformation process that dealt an overwhelming blow to the structural underpinnings of racism and eradicated institutionalized racial discrimination,\u201d said the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, speaking today online in the Ministerial Meeting on the Elimination of Racism, Xenophobia and Racial Discrimination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, quoting President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel, he pointed out that \u201cthere are still a few vestiges remaining in our society, not due to a government policy, but as part of the culture of some people\u201d and said that Cubans have \u201cevery right and the opportunity to carry out coherent and impactful actions that will help us solve these problems in our society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an example of this and of the \u201ccommitment of our government\u201d on this issue, Rodr\u00edguez explained that \u201cin November 2019, the National Program against Racism and Racial Discrimination was approved, under the coordination of a Government Commission led by the President of the Republic of Cuba.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"oo7ulyv1hs\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/echoes\/race-and-heredity-in-contemporary-cuban-society\/\">Race and Heredity in Contemporary Cuban Society<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Race and Heredity in Contemporary Cuban Society&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/echoes\/race-and-heredity-in-contemporary-cuban-society\/embed\/#?secret=wAWgVJwmu3#?secret=oo7ulyv1hs\" data-secret=\"oo7ulyv1hs\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, in his speech at the international forum, the Foreign Minister said that \u201cthe Cuban Revolution has gone beyond its borders in the fight against this scourge\u201d and pointed out that \u201cthousands of Cubans supported, even at the cost of their own lives, the fight of African peoples for their independence and against the degrading apartheid regime,\u201d while \u201cmany others have offered their solidarity to these peoples, particularly in the health care sector.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding the global panorama, he recalled that \u201cthis year we commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the historic World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, but the goals established in the Durban Plan and Program of Action are yet to be achieved.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cWe are no way near the materialization of the 2030 Agenda either,\u201d he said, and commented that \u201cthe world is witnessing an alarming spate of racism, racial discrimination and xenophobia\u201d and \u201csocial and other communication media are being used as platforms to promote them.\u201d \u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic and the crises it has exacerbated further expose the unjust international order that for decades has turned the poor, afro descendants or migrants into targets of all kinds of discrimination,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faced with this scenario, Rodr\u00edguez asserted that Cuba will \u201ckeep making progress through concrete actions in line with the sense of social justice and humanism that characterize our socialism\u201d and following Marti\u2019s premise that \u201cthere is no racial hatred because there are no race<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Intervenci\u00f3n Reuni\u00f3n Ministerial sobre la Eliminaci\u00f3n del racismo, la xenofobia y la discriminaci\u00f3n.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/quJlP08ygt8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; Although legally and constitutionally all people have the same rights on the island regardless of the color of their skin, intellectuals, researchers and the authorities themselves have recognized the existence of social and cultural factors that reproduce racist attitudes and stereotypes still exist even after six decades of the 1959 revolutionary
