We talked about the continued efforts to achieve the safe return to the homeland of our two kidnapped doctors,\u201d wrote the Cuban health minister on his Twitter account, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acn.cu\/salud\/76933-prosiguen-gestiones-para-regreso-de-medicos-cubanos-secuestrados-en-kenya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agencia Cubana de Noticias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> news agency reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">El Ministro expres\u00f3 su agradecimiento por el trabajo de los especialistas de Cuba en Kenya y por los estudiantes que se forman en nuestro pa\u00eds.<br \/>Conversamos sobre la continuidad de las gestiones para lograr el regreso seguro a la Patria de nuestros dos m\u00e9dicos secuestrados. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RBdX0WTYZC\">pic.twitter.com\/RBdX0WTYZC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jos\u00e9 Angel Portal Miranda (@japortalmiranda) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/japortalmiranda\/status\/1364730611341144064?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 25, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors Assel Herrera and Landy Rodr\u00edguez were abducted at dawn on April 12, 2019, by alleged members of the Al-Shabaab terrorist group when they were going to the hospital in the town of Mandera, in Kenya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctors\u2019 bodyguard was killed during the attack by the jihadist militants. Months later, the driver of the vehicle in which they were traveling was prosecuted for his alleged complicity in the events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later reports indicated that the doctors were alive in Somalia, and Al-Shabaab allegedly demanded an amount equivalent to 1.5 million US dollars for the release of the Cubans. The Kenyan government responded publicly that it would not pay the ransom, while the island\u2019s authorities denied the news of the alleged negotiation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the kidnapping, Cuba formed a government working group to coordinate with the Kenyan and Somali authorities the actions to obtain the return of the two Cuban doctors, the source indicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last October, the island\u2019s government denied recent news about the supposed release of the doctors.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote Communication and Image of the Ministry of Foreign Relations (MINREX) then wrote on Twitter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Foreign Ministry spokesman assured that enormous efforts were being made to ensure their release and safe return to Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.minrex.gob.cu\/es\/desmiente-cuba-las-noticias-sobre-la-supuesta-liberacion-de-los-dos-medicos-cubanos-en-kenya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">official reaction <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was made known a few minutes after the news that affirmed the release of the doctors in Somalia was
