
{"id":235608,"date":"2021-03-05T07:15:43","date_gmt":"2021-03-05T12:15:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=235608"},"modified":"2021-03-05T07:15:43","modified_gmt":"2021-03-05T12:15:43","slug":"the-war-of-the-s-and-the-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/the-war-of-the-s-and-the-c\/","title":{"rendered":"The war of the S and the C"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Twitter account of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rae.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Royal Spanish Academy of the Language<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RAEinforma) invited a few days ago to remember words typical of Cubans, starting precisely with the term \u201cCubanism\u201d presented as their word of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the initiative, three words, taken from the \u201cDictionary of Americanisms\u201d, served as a base to stimulate its almost two million readers, and among them, the many Cubans who follow it. Then we saw written: \u201cguachinear\u201d (which in all truth I haven\u2019t heard much), \u201cbalita de gas\u201d (a liquefied gas cylinder and a common word for any Cuban), \u201cacere\u201d (sic), and \u201cerro\u201d (idem).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cerro,\u201d which I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve heard either, happened without the greatest importance; just like that of \u201cguachinear\u201d and \u201cbalita de gas\u201d; But the \u201c<strong>acere<\/strong>\u201d provoked a barrage of criteria, jokes and even some rude remarks; there were so many that those who administer the account may have been frustrated with the vehemence of the defenders of the S.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PalabraDelD%C3%ADa?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PalabraDelD\u00eda<\/a> | cubanismo<\/p>\n<p>Estos son algunos cubanismos recogidos en el \u00abDLE\u00bb y en el \u00abDiccionario de americanismos\u00bb:<\/p>\n<p>guachinear \u2192 estar entre dos aguas<br \/>balita de gas \u2192 bombona de gas butano<br \/>acere \u2192 amigo \u00edntimo, compa\u00f1ero inseparable<br \/>erro \u2192 error, yerro<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfProponen m\u00e1s? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nAUgLvAFQx\">pic.twitter.com\/nAUgLvAFQx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; RAE (@RAEinforma) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RAEinforma\/status\/1364107868807589888?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 23, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the insistence of Cuban users, who warned that \u201c<strong>asere<\/strong>,\u201d that phrase-greeting so frequently used and extended on the island, is always spelled with \u201cS,\u201d the RAE spokespersons did not even have one of those great options they usually have on occasions to put an end to discussions or comments such as those that filled the proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most that RAEinforma could claim for the avalanche of the demanding Cubans and somehow give them an answer until it saw that it was useless to do so, was to explain that \u201cthe academic dictionary of Americanisms records the two spellings, both documented in use, although with a preference for \u201cacere\u201d: \u201cDon\u2019t get like that, asere\u201d (Zo\u00e9 Vald\u00e9s); \u201cWell, acere, that\u2019s up to you, starve to death in Havana\u201d (Juan Pedro Guti\u00e9rrez).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, the mistake then belongs to Juan Pedro, one of them said.\u2026 But, it\u2019s not Juan Pedro, RAE! another one complained ironically: that it\u2019s Pedro Juan\u2019s, and that he must have spelled it wrong himself. And so it went on and on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201caseres\u201d withered the RAEinforma labeling the Institution, among other terms, and in a display of extreme nationalism, as colonialist; and in this way, the initiative was at the mercy of the commentators, who continued to contribute common words to Cubans such as \u201cla pincha\u201d and \u201cel tibiritabara,\u201d \u201cconsorte,\u201d \u201cmiroldo,\u201d \u201calmendr\u00f3n,\u201d \u201cchapear\u201d&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the RAE did not say a word when faced with the sustained mockery and the insistence that \u201casere\u201d only has one spelling, although the Dictionary of the Language itself does not include either of the two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the issue here is not the origin of the word\u2014we have Argelio Santiesteban\u2019s column for that\u2014but the intention of remembering that the problem of the S in \u201casere\u201d brought about another one that, although in reverse, occurred when we wrote \u201cseiba\u201d once, alluding to the title of a Cuban writer whose intelligence some questioned precisely because of that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the widespread use of the word that defines those powerful trees that in some areas of Cuba function as a temple for the orishas, \u200b\u200bit is spelled with a C, but that C only repeats a mistake noticed many years ago by Cuban naturalist Tranquilino Santalio de Noda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his \u201cMemorias de la Sociedad Econ\u00f3mica, Noticias hist\u00f3ricas, geogr\u00e1ficas y estad\u00edsticas del Marien\u201d (1847), Santalio de Noda explained that the mistake comes from Jesuit father Jos\u00e9 de Acosta and his <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historia Natural y Moral de las Indias<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the word was poorly written until it was registered by the RAE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ceiba, however, is a marine plant, an alga, warns the wise sir from Artemisa, while pointing out that seiba, with S, was the way the Siboney indians called the tree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would be fruitful if for the next time the word of the day on the RAE account is once again a Cubanism, and even better if it chooses Seiba so that, with it, it can give way to another discussion, heated or whatever, because
