{"id":235996,"date":"2021-03-12T12:52:58","date_gmt":"2021-03-12T17:52:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=235996"},"modified":"2021-03-12T12:52:58","modified_gmt":"2021-03-12T17:52:58","slug":"forest-fire-devastates-340-hectares-of-forest-in-guantanamo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/forest-fire-devastates-340-hectares-of-forest-in-guantanamo\/","title":{"rendered":"Forest fire devastates 340 hectares of forest in Guant\u00e1namo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The largest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/forest-fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forest fire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> registered this year in Cuba destroyed around 340 hectares of forest in the municipality of Manuel Tames, in the eastern province of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/guantanamo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guant\u00e1namo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The president of the Municipal Defense Council, Yunior Direntaud, pointed out that the fire originated in Alto del Zorzal, belonging to the people\u2019s council of La Caridad de los Indios, and damaged the refuge of different species of birds, reptiles, and other species of wildlife fauna, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2021-03-11\/mayor-incendio-forestal-del-ano-arrasa-340-hectareas-11-03-2021-00-03-58\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granma<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> newspaper reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the source, it is the largest forest fire so far this year in Cuba, whose extension is greater than those that previously occurred in Artemisa, Villa Clara, Matanzas, Holgu\u00edn, Santiago de Cuba and Isla de la Juventud, put together. To date, there are already a total 545 hectares of burned forests in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Incendio forestal en <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Guant%C3%A1namo?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Guant\u00e1namo<\/a> afecta 340 hect\u00e1reas  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MLzom4whrT\">https:\/\/t.co\/MLzom4whrT<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zo4J6Zbw08\">pic.twitter.com\/zo4J6Zbw08<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Radio Guant\u00e1namo (@RadioGtmo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RadioGtmo\/status\/1369708482782523393?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 10, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Direntaud explained that the coordinated action of the Forest Ranger Corps in the locality together with the personnel of the state forest and grain-based units prevented further damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was necessary to open fire trails and use alternative means, teams of oxen even transferred water to the area of \u200b\u200bthe fire that, however, spread quickly, helped by the force and direction of the winds,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fire has already been put out and \u201cconstant vigilance\u201d is being maintained throughout the affected area to prevent possible flare-ups, local authorities said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rafael Wilson, forest protection specialist with the Guantanamo Forest Ranger Corps, lamented the damage caused by the fire to a forested area with extensive biodiversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe ecological niche of birds was broken,\u201d said the expert in reference to the thrush, which gives the place its name (zorzal).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo add insult to injury, the fire happened when the courtship, mate selection, mating and reproduction of the birds had begun,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quoted by the state newspaper, Wilson stated that in addition, the area was home to bees, jut\u00eda congas, and the species of maj\u00e1 de Santamar\u00eda and other reptiles, insects and rodents, which had to migrate to nearby forests and now will take time to return to their \u201cvegetable city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is the largest forest fire so far this year in Cuba, the extent of which is greater than all those that previously occurred in other Cuban territories.
