The challenge revolves around respect for citizens\u2019 human rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Biden administration says support for democracy and human rights will be at the core of its policy toward Cuba.\u00a0 That is a righteous goal, and I hope it does the same for other repressive governments.\u00a0 But the question is how to achieve it.\u00a0 Unilateral sanctions almost never work, and they have failed miserably in Cuba,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leahy.senate.gov\/press\/statement-of-senator-patrick-leahy-the-united-states-and-cuba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he said in a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf the Biden administration conditions our re-engagement with Cuba on steps we know its government will not take and that we do not demand of U.S. allies that are no less and in some cases more repressive, we will perpetuate a policy that has hurt, not helped, the Cuban people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among other things, he said, because \u201cfor more than half a century, the United States has imposed a labyrinth of punishing economic sanctions on Cuba, an impoverished island of 11 million people, in an attempt to pressure its government to hold democratic elections.\u00a0 I certainly share the goal of democracy, but Cuba is no closer to free and fair elections than any time in its history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"eVFuf8iCTA\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/senator-patrick-leahy-i-am-confident-that-if-we-were-afforded-the-opportunity-to-vote-it-would-be-law-for-americans-to-travel-freely-to-cuba\/\">Senator Patrick Leahy: &#8220;I am confident that if we were afforded the opportunity to vote, it would be law for Americans to travel freely to Cuba&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Senator Patrick Leahy: &#8220;I am confident that if we were afforded the opportunity to vote, it would be law for Americans to travel freely to Cuba&#8221;&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/senator-patrick-leahy-i-am-confident-that-if-we-were-afforded-the-opportunity-to-vote-it-would-be-law-for-americans-to-travel-freely-to-cuba\/embed\/#?secret=XJ45kUOBLY#?secret=eVFuf8iCTA\" data-secret=\"eVFuf8iCTA\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Saudi Crown Prince orchestrated the gruesome murder of a respected journalist.\u00a0 Egypt, a military dictatorship that receives billions of dollars in U.S. aid, has imprisoned tens of thousands of people for their political beliefs.\u00a0 They should be held accountable, but no one is suggesting that we impose an economic embargo against those countries or demanding that they hold free and fair elections if they want to remain allies of the United States,\u201d said the Democratic senator, known for his advocacy of openness towards the Caribbean island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leahy recalled the achievements of former President Barack Obama\u2019s thaw policy and his constructive engagement. It was thus, he recalls, that Americans traveled to Cuba in record numbers traveled to the island, patronizing Cuban Airbnb hosts, restaurants, and other small businesses.\u00a0 The two governments signed nearly two dozen agreements to discuss issues ranging from property claims to law enforcement cooperation. Cultural and educational exchanges flourished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then came Donald Trump, who, declaring that \u201cthe Obama policy a failure in order to curry favor with Florida voters, restored and further tightened sanctions.\u00a0 The result:\u00a0 Americans\u2019 right to travel to Cuba was denied by their own government, Cuban-Americans\u2019 right to send remittances to their relatives was severely curtailed, Cuban entrepreneurs went out of business, dissidents were arrested, and life got worse for the Cuban people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senator Leahy admitted that, despite U.S. sanctions, Cuba remains a one-party state, but that \u201cit is also changing in a positive way, largely due to demographics and the Internet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But all this does not prevent Washington from \u201cbeing able to actively engage\u201d in the evolution of society. Otherwise, \u201cwatch as our competitors fill the vacuum, as they are already doing. There is only one logical choice,\u201d concluded the senator who actively participated in the diplomatic resumption process at the ambassadorial level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to two members of the Leahy milieu and the Hispanic Council, this statement (the content of which is not strictly speaking a novelty) is a wake-up call to the current administration due to the incongruity of its current foreign policy and the need for it to be more open in relation to the Island. \u201cWe must open the Consulate in Havana. We have thousands of separated families.
