
{"id":236920,"date":"2021-03-31T16:24:29","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T20:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=236920"},"modified":"2021-03-31T16:24:29","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T20:24:29","slug":"the-washington-post-praises-cubas-achievements-in-development-of-covid-19-vaccines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/the-washington-post-praises-cubas-achievements-in-development-of-covid-19-vaccines\/","title":{"rendered":"The Washington Post praises Cuba\u2019s achievements in development of COVID-19 vaccines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When on March 23, 2016, former President <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/barack-obama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barack Obama<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mentioned at the Grand Theater of Havana Cuban public health as one of the island\u2019s achievements, a large part of the audience smiled and applauded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Obama\u2019s visit to the island\u2019s capital was an extraordinary event\u2014the second by a U.S. president in the country\u2019s history and the first since the revolutionary triumph that placed both nations at loggerheads\u2014the public recognition of one of Cuba\u2019s greatest pride was something unexpected, coming from whom it came.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Something similar happened this week when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2021\/03\/29\/cuba-coronavirus-vaccine-iran-venezuela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Washington Post<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recognized that, \u201cagainst all odds,\u201d the fact that Cuba has entered the global race for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vaccines is a consequence of the development of its biotechnology industry, something unusual in Third World countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCuba is an authoritarian, one-party state with strict curbs on free speech, political activism and economic freedoms. But investments in education and health care planted the seed of what is today an unusually sophisticated biotechnology apparatus for a small developing country, with at least 31 research companies and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">62 factories with over 20,000 workers,\u201d wrote the U.S. daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, it continued, \u201cForty years later, the communist island nation could be<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the cusp of a singular breakthrough: Becoming the world\u2019s smallest country to develop not just one, but multiple <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/coronavirus\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vaccines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this time, two of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/cuban-vaccine-against-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Soberana 02 and Abdala, are already in phase three of clinical trials and tested in hundreds of Cubans, although the final results of the studies have not yet been revealed. Cubans are already working on a total of five vaccine candidates, the remaining three still in less advanced stages. But they already have clients, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Washington Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venezuela, for example, is one. Another is Iran, a nation to which 100,000 doses have also been sent their study among Iranians. This last case is a rare indication of politics because the Persian country could have chosen the Chinese or the Russian vaccine, which have already managed to enter Latin America. The funny thing about this is that U.S diplomacy continues to consider the three countries as members of the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/01\/29\/bush-axis-of-evil-2002-1127725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Axis of Evil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d an expression coined by former Republican President George W. Iran has agreed to host a Phase 3 trial of one of Cuba\u2019s most promising candidates\u2014Soberana 2\u2014as part of a technology transfer agreement that could see millions of doses manufactured in Iran,\u201d the U.S. daily highlighted. There is also a rumor, although not verified or officially announced, that Iran has participated in the costs of developing the vaccine, including obtaining Cuba\u2019s access to the world market of various components necessary for its production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShould they prove successful, the (Cuban) vaccines would be an against-the-odds feat of medical prowess\u2014as well as a public relations coup\u2014for an isolated<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">country of 11 million that was added back to the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism in the final days of the Trump administration,\u201d the U.S. capital\u2019s newspaper underlined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have great confidence in Cuban medical science and biotechnology,\u201d Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Washington Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this week. \u201cIt will not only be fundamental for Venezuela, but for the Americas. It will be the true solution for our people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, for the newspaper published in Washington DC, an eventual Cuban success in this field could shake the immobility of U.S. policy towards the Caribbean island, which practically remains the same as that of former President Donald Trump, even if Joe Biden is already occupying the White House. After relatively low infection rates last year, the island\u2019s coronavirus cases have skyrocketed in recent weeks, making it one of several new hot spots in Latin America heavily affected by the pandemic, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the newspaper also noted that some critics have warned that the Cuban government may be acting too quickly, boosting an experimental vaccine in a large population in an effort to quickly recover the tourist dollars lost to the Trump administration\u2019s setbacks and sanctions, which Biden has inherited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with its remarks, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Washington Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s article is a finding because the U.S. newspaper has an editorial policy that is not very flattering towards the island. Since Fidel Castro came to power, its editorials, usually unsigned, have been very critical of the Cuban government, unlike those of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which played a positive role in the birth of the bilateral thaw policy promoted by former Presidents Barack Obama and Ra\u00fal
