Developing in joint biotech innovation center in Yongzhou, Hunan Province, staffed by Cuban scientists, equipped by China. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PMZIfXYIhJ\">pic.twitter.com\/PMZIfXYIhJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; GailReedMEDICC (@MediccGail) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MediccGail\/status\/1373634060837355524?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 21, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative focuses on coronaviruses not only due to the global crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 but also taking into account that this family of viruses is one of the most likely to jump from animals to humans (a phenomenon called zoonosis), with antecedents such as MERS or SARS-CoV-1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How is a generic vaccine made?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have learned from what has been happening in recent years and we would be naive if we did not prepare for possible new emergencies. China knows this too,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, in February of last year, with the COVID-19 pandemic in its infancy, the CIGB presented this project to a call from the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and obtained funding to start investigating \u201csomething different,\u201d given that \u201ceverybody in the world\u201d was already working on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/cuban-vaccines-against-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against SARS-CoV-2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pan-Corona is a recombinant-type antigen, which is the vaccine development platform in which the CIGB has the most experience, with a successful history such as the one for hepatitis B, in addition to two of the COVID-19 vaccine candidates, one of them (Abdala) in the last phase of clinical trials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are not starting from scratch or trying something unprecedented, therefore we trust that we will move forward quickly,\u201d he said and recalled that the institution has more than 50 research projects, not only in vaccines but also in oncology, infectious diseases, cardioprotection or autoimmunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5Vd741I686\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/coronavirus\/cuba-and-china-to-develop-a-vaccine-against-new-strains-of-the-coronavirus\/\">Cuba and China to develop a vaccine against new strains of the coronavirus<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Cuba and China to develop a vaccine against new strains of the coronavirus&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/coronavirus\/cuba-and-china-to-develop-a-vaccine-against-new-strains-of-the-coronavirus\/embed\/#?secret=jsVJqVEJOw#?secret=5Vd741I686\" data-secret=\"5Vd741I686\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaccine candidate, the scientist explained, combines two immune response mechanisms: the humoral, which is the antibody response, and the cellular, which are cells activated to fight the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are looking, among the different coronaviruses, for conserved regions for both antibody and cellular responses,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words: a vaccine is being designed that artificially combines common fragments of different types of already known coronavirus, with the aim of inducing an antibody response in the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Scientific globalization<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bioinformatics and modeling groups from the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CIGBCuba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CIGB<\/a> have worked in the design. Photo: Ernesto Mastrascusa\/EFE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The knowledge accumulated in recent months has propelled the work, but the Cuban scientists leading the Pan-Corona research have not yet been able to travel to China due to border closures and strict entry requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Research under embargo<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being able to do research in situ in <a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yongzhou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yongzhou<\/a> is crucial in this case because of access to advanced technology, materials and other resources, something that in Cuba is impossible due to the acute economic crisis the country is experiencing and the obstacles imposed by the United States embargo also reinforced in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe blockade (as the embargo is called in Cuba) is an enormous limitation, even the increase in the price of raw materials, which for Cuba is double, triple, quadruple because we cannot bring them directly from the United States, which is the closest market and where most of these inputs we need are produced. Also the limitation with the equipment, the spare parts\u2026,\u201d Guill\u00e9n added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These obstacles, however, have also made the island\u2019s scientists more creative: \u201cwithout a doubt, the blockade has forced us to innovate because others could have the things they need and we have to find other ways to achieve the same result.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have such and such a reagent, well, how can we replace it, how can we change the process,\u201d he
