
{"id":238357,"date":"2021-05-02T02:20:14","date_gmt":"2021-05-02T06:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=238357"},"modified":"2021-05-02T03:19:03","modified_gmt":"2021-05-02T07:19:03","slug":"trust-investing-in-cuba-opportunity-or-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/trust-investing-in-cuba-opportunity-or-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"Trust Investing in Cuba: opportunity or scam?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have been connected to the Internet in the last year, it is very likely that within your network of contacts on Facebook and WhatsApp you have come across a member of the controversial Trust Investing \u201ccrypto asset investment platform.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the slogan \u201cIn Trust I trust,\u201d digital finance enthusiasts seek to multiply profits and add their acquaintances to what seems to be a solution\u2014almost magical\u2014to achieve financial freedom: the promise of more than 200% return on the initial investment in 10 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Cuba, with an economy increasingly affected and aggravated by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pandemic, the promise of generating passive income seduces thousands of people, who have joined Trust Investing. Several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tulipresearch.com\/es\/trust-investing-esquema-ponzi-latinoamerica\/?fbclid=IwAR1fWUQW0QU0Ato2HwbhGJAwYPwthRFOfC9HBkvLkco3mgE9iZn0fqs949g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have described the scheme as a Ponzi scam, alluding to the famous case of Carlos Ponzi in the United States, who paid his initial investors with the money of the new investors. A system that is mathematically doomed to failure once people run out of the pyramid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there are no official figures, the \u201ctrusters\u201d themselves, as the members of this community call themselves, calculate in their groups in the digital media that more than 70,000 people in Cuba are linked to this informal business system that has no regulations, and whose legal implications are a gray area on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, earlier this week it was announced that Ruslan Concepci\u00f3n, director and principal promoter of Trust Investing in Cuba, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/detienen-al-director-en-cuba-de-la-gestora-de-criptomonedas-trust-investing-por-presunta-actividad-economica-ilicita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was detained at the Havana airport<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when he was preparing to travel to Russia, after border agents considered that the money he was traveling with did not come from a legal source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is Trust Investing really a Ponzi scheme? If it were a scam, why do its members continue to generate profits and more and more followers join the pyramid? How does everything really work?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least in two countries, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.supervalores.gob.pa\/informacion-general\/organigrama\/perfiles-de-funcionarios\/215-informacion-del-mercado\/varios-alertas-al-inversionista\/10471-comunicado-publico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panama<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brokeronline.es\/traders-afectados-por-trust-investing-estafa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, scam alerts have been issued for this \u201ccompany,\u201d whose actual activities are not clear and which has a proselytizing work system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the aim of investigating more about an extremely delicate topic that arouses so many passions, <\/span><b>OnCuba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spoke with experts in Economics and Social Sciences, and we compiled a series of documents and official sources on international trading that serve as a starting point to begin to understand the ABC of Trust Investing in Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>What is Trust Investing?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some call it a \u201cfraternity\u201d of people who trust and bet on a company of dubious provenance and who often do not allow criticism or skeptical thinking about its budgets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trustinvesting.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Trust Investing describes itself as a \u201ccrypto asset management company in the most daring markets\u201d that has \u201ca high liquidity index\u201d and offers its clients and partners \u201cthe opportunity to be an integral part of this innovative market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, various verifications at our fingertips generate, to say the least, doubts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/stacyherbert\/status\/1386397786816487426?s=20<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For starters, the official business address ranges from Panama to Estonia, but physical locations don\u2019t exist outside the virtual world. In addition, they claim to be associated with BDL Bank, we weren\u2019t able to verify the existence of such a bank, and the address attributed to it belongs to a hotel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Panamanian government itself <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.supervalores.gob.pa\/informacion-general\/organigrama\/perfiles-de-funcionarios\/215-informacion-del-mercado\/varios-alertas-al-inversionista\/10471-comunicado-publico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">publicly warned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in June 2020 that Trust Investing was not authorized to operate in the stock market or provide investment services, something the company claims to do with investors\u2019 money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Spain, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnmv.es\/Portal\/ResultadoBusqueda.aspx?tipo=1&amp;nombre=trust%20investing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is not authorized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to offer financial services either, despite the fact that its founders are Spanish, according to the National Securities Market Commission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then, where does the money come from with which investors\u2019 profits are paid? The answer seems to indicate that it comes from the new investors, as would happen in a classic Ponzi scheme; this is confirmed by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tulipresearch.com\/es\/trust-investing-esquema-ponzi-latinoamerica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tulip Research<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fraudulent activity analysis firm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ponzi scheme<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to discover it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They promise benefits way above the market average<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company has very few documents on its services<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company is not registered or controlled by a trustworthy regulator<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its principal target are investors who have little financial knowledge<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will always exist an investor who is going to easily collect what was promised, to generate trust<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source: brokeronline.es<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without having clear company addresses or documents that prove what they do, some of the company executives mention in videos circulating on social networks that, in addition to trading with cryptocurrencies, they operate an emerald mine in Brazil and have investments in an alleged renewable energy company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust Investing is also a \u201ccompany\u201d whose founder and director, Diego Chaves, has been involved in at least five legal proceedings, some of them from the financial world, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/telegra.ph\/Tr%C3%A1ders-afectados-por-Trust-Investing-estafa-wwwtrustinvestingcom-06-04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brokeronline portal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juan Alejandro Triana, professor at the Center for Economic Studies at the University of Havana, confirms that when we talk about Trust Investing operations, there is no doubt that we are facing a Ponzi scheme:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn a few years it will be discovered that it is a financial scam. What\u2019s going on? The people who have created it have been quite intelligent, which is why it is in good health to date. This is not the same as the first pyramid schemes that Carlos Ponzi created at the beginning of the 20th century to scam people, but it has been optimized along with the vertiginous development of the financial market and financial engineering in the world,\u201d explained Triana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>So why do people keep logging in if it could be considered a scam?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis investment fund is driven by a system of very intelligent rules that forces people to reinvest, that is, to buy another investment package,\u201d Triana explained to <\/span><b>OnCuba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBecause if you keep investing in the same initial package, the monthly returns will decrease. That is, for a third investment of $100, [the person] would pay 19, 18 percent. All this has as a result that people have done very well, they decide to invest more and do better networking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triana estimates that in Cuba there are between 60,000 and 70,000 people who are already investing in Trust Investing. If you invest more, they place you at a higher level as a \u201cteam leader,\u201d \u201cmanager\u201d and for those categories they make you monthly payments of certain amounts,\u201d explained Triana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investment distribution in Trust Investing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do they do with the money?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person invests, for example, 100 dollars in bitcoin (which becomes a USD internal balance)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% goes to Trust Investing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% to the person who provided the reference<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% for marketing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that, according to the promise made to double the initial money in 10 months, Trust Investing would turn the equivalent into cryptocurrencies of 50 dollars into 200. An incredible +300% return. The average of another fund dedicated to cryptocurrencies called Crypto Hedge Fund, for example, was only +30% in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source: Fabiano Lima. Manuel Milan\u00e9s Youtube channel<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem that prevents seeing clearly the implicit scam in the Ponzi schemes is that at the beginning they always pay, they \u201cwork\u201d with the money that comes in from new contributors, until one day, overnight, the fresh injection of capital runs out and the company and the money disappear. In this case, anyone who has investments still in it is harmed and, since no one knows when this can happen, a large number of people can potentially be affected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Do I trust Trust?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other countries, such as Turkey, several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/economia\/2021\/04\/26\/otro-fraude-millonario-en-el-mundo-bitcoin-cerro-una-segunda-plataforma-y-hubo-un-retiro-masivo-de-fondos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar companies have collapsed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and fled with billions of dollars in cryptocurrencies, such as Vebitcoin and Thodex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust Investing has not been the first nor the only company related to cryptocurrencies and pyramid scams that have reached Cubans, inside and outside Cuba. Names like Arbistar and Nimbus have also claimed some \u201cvictims\u201d on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even non-digital scams that have proliferated in times of pandemic have been <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.granma.cu\/doble-click\/2021-02-11\/la-bola-nueva-estafa-digital-de-tu-dinero-11-02-2021-01-02-26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">denounced by the official Cuban press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as is the case of the so-called \u201cBola.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the discussions on the networks about these issues tend to be extremely polarized, as the trusters see the positive result that their investment has so far had, and they show complete trust in their \u201cleaders\u201d and energetically\u2014frequently aggressively\u2014express themselves against opponents of the source of their earnings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what happened to the Cuban entrepreneur and influencer Erich Garc\u00eda, creator of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCx8GU_YJAUY80ch5MtuiJsA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bache Cubano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> YouTube channel and one of the first to publicly expose the pyramid scam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bro, thanks for the tolerance. TI was the first, actually they are ALL the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when I made the Trust videos and saw what it involved\u2026I gave up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invest in whatever you want&#8230;I don\u2019t care bro. It\u2019s your money, it\u2019s your consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t invest in any.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 Erich J. Garc\u00eda Cruz <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#x1f680;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (@ErichGarciaCruz) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ErichGarciaCruz\/status\/1387443140815097861?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April 28, 2021<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although very little has been published and studied on this phenomenon from the sociological point of view in Cuba, Adalberto Hern\u00e1ndez Santos, Master in Education in the United Kingdom and Specialist in Digital Literacy, explained to <\/span><b>OnCuba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that this phenomenon is booming \u201cat a time when we have two preconditions in Cuba: the increase in Internet access in the population and that the minimum investment is barely 15 dollars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll this comes in the context of the pandemic, where uncertainty has increased, where tourism and sources of work have decreased. People saw TI then as a promise to be able to invest and obtain a certain benefit in a very short term, without doing anything,\u201d says Hern\u00e1ndez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The success stories also began to spread more quickly, he explains, something that is typical of this system to continue attracting more people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Hern\u00e1ndez, we are in the face of easy money, \u201cfrom home, sitting down, with the promise of growth and profits,\u201d that no business in the world has. Something that is not exclusive to Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hern\u00e1ndez recognizes in Trust Investing parameters of other Ponzi or pyramid schemes, such as Herbalife and Amway, \u201cbut at least in the latter two you have products that \u2018justify\u2019 the expenses and the investment issue, but in Trust Investing there isn\u2019t even a product.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these Ponzi schemes are used to circulate money from drug trafficking and international terrorism, while people use their own social and family networks to create investor networks. \u201cYou don\u2019t log into anything until you establish an investment line,\u201d Hern\u00e1ndez sentences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some \u201ctrusters\u201d contradict this statement by saying that they do not have networks under them and still continue to win. The answer to that lies in Trust Investing\u2019s capped earnings rules, in which networks that someone else builds can contribute to that artificial \u201cprofit\u201d that someone else gets without networks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRight now the Ponzi scheme for growth in Cuba is very large, because there is very little digital and financial literacy. Very few critically evaluate or discern when information is true and where it comes from,\u201d says Hern\u00e1ndez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The way to attract new investors, in this case for Trust Investing, is not based on personal charisma to sell, but on the strength of affective relationships, on attracting people who trust the person in question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have had fights with friends, just for having doubts about the company. I tell them to find out if these people really have vineyards, to look for the address they say they have in Spain, but they don\u2019t. Having a critical vision and knowing how to compare the information is essential so that people do not fall for this type of scam,\u201d says Hern\u00e1ndez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is speculated that the \u201ccompany\u201d should stop promoting itself in 2024, date on which, according to its directors, they will go back to being \u201cprivate,\u201d without offering convincing reasons for this decision. Meanwhile, people aware or unaware of the scam continue to invest and attract more people to the company, with the justification of \u201cmaking money while it works.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe issue is that it will be necessary to see what regulations in Cuba could criminalize scams in the digital context, because until now there has not been something like this,\u201d continues the specialist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen the scam appears, many fractures will occur in family and social relationships, in circles of friends, in the workplace. There\u2019s going to be a major disappointment, because people are investing based on people they trust, thinking they wouldn\u2019t let them down,\u201d says Hern\u00e1ndez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEither way,\u201d he continues, \u201cassuming Trust Investing falls tomorrow, other similar companies are going to emerge.
