{"id":238523,"date":"2021-05-06T10:41:59","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T14:41:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=238523"},"modified":"2021-05-06T10:41:59","modified_gmt":"2021-05-06T14:41:59","slug":"cuba-month-of-activities-against-homophobia-begins-with-sights-set-on-lgtbi-community-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-month-of-activities-against-homophobia-begins-with-sights-set-on-lgtbi-community-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba: month of activities against homophobia begins with sights set on LGTBI community rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 14th edition of the days against homophobia and transphobia in Cuba began this Tuesday and will run throughout the month of May with a wide program of activities, according to its organizers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the slogan \u201cAll rights for all people,\u201d the days\u2019 activities will take place mainly on virtual platforms due to the COVID-19 pandemic, just like last year, and has as a context the transformations envisaged in the legal reorganization of the country, in line with the Constitution enacted in 2019, officials of the National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX) pointed out at a press conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this sense, the drafting of a new Family Code stands out. Once this code\u2019s drafting commission, which<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/society-cuba\/politics-in-cuba\/cuba-commission-in-charge-of-drafting-family-code-announced\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was recently announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, finishes its work it must be taken to a referendum for approval. It should include same-sex marriage, an issue that generated controversy during popular debates on the current Magna Carta, and a plural and inclusive conception of the family as a social institution, among other claims of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/lgbti-community\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGTBI community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will be addressed in the actions of the following days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe activities of the days seek to contextualize the process of updating the legal system based on the enactment of the new Constitution, and particularly the norms that will develop the constitutionally foreseen contents, associated with sexual rights related to sexual orientation and gender identity,\u201d said MSc. Manuel V\u00e1zquez Seijido, deputy director of CENESEX.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fcenesex%2Fvideos%2F114122770723817%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=476\" width=\"476\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">V\u00e1zquez Seijido assured that these activities are part of the educational process that must accompany the legal transformations previewed to contribute to the \u201crecognition and guarantee of sexual rights\u201d and the fight against \u201call types of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the actions that make up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Programa-14JCCHT.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the days\u2019 program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he highlighted two forum debates on the myths around homo-affective families and couples and the advances and main challenges related to sexual rights in Cuba. Also, a panel on diverse families and non-hegemonic life stories, which will include people who have built families outside of heteronormativity; another panel on the National Program for the Advancement of Women and the opportunities it entails to confront homophobia and transphobia, and a third on religious fundamentalisms and non-heteronormative gender identities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, there will be book presentations, a discussion on inclusive communication, a virtual meeting of activists, numerous communication actions and, although the pandemic again prevents the expected in-site march from taking place, the now-traditional gala against homophobia and transphobia will be held, which they hope to broadcast on national television.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For her part, Dr. Mariela Castro Esp\u00edn, director of CENESEX, commented that the initiative that has been developed since 2008\u2014and whose official name is Cuban Days Against Homophobia and Transphobia\u2014will be based on the experience of last year in the virtual space, so it has been organized \u201cwith greater clarity about its scope and possibilities,\u201d and she stressed that it will \u201cemphasize the space for academic exchange, socialization of scientific results, and activism, to help raise awareness in society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_337651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-337651\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyloaded wp-image-337651 size-full\" title=\"Mariela Castro Espin, director of the National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX) speaks at the press conference on the 14th Cuban Days against Homophobia and Transphobia, in Havana, on May 4, 2021. Photo: Ernesto Mastrascusa\/EFE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Castro Esp\u00edn affirmed that her center \u201chas worked intensely to position the issues of the rights of LGTBI persons on the Cuban political agenda\u201d and said that neither the Constitution nor the legal norms are sufficient to guarantee these rights if they are not accompanied by concrete actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe letter of the law does not transform by itself, it transforms all the actions that are covered by that law, and that is precisely part of our work: not only influencing the political actions and strategies that are developed, but also the creation of awareness and the transformation of knowledge, in such a way that the usual prejudices regarding families, their rights, the recognition of their different types are not continued, and that heterosexual people are not the only ones who have the widely recognized rights, but that all people in the field of sexual and gender diversity can have access to the same legal protection,\u201d said the daughter of former President Ra\u00fal Castro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The director of CENESEX, who is a member of the commission in charge of the final drafting of the Family Code, said she felt \u201cvery hopeful\u201d that this code would have \u201cthe approval of the majority of the people and give rise to the recognition and guarantee of diversity of families that exist in our country,\u201d and that with this the \u201cyes\u201d is finally given to same-sex marriage and other demands of the Cuban LGTBI community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am sure that we are going to achieve it and we are going to celebrate it,\u201d said the also deputy to the National Assembly of People\u2019s Power, who calculated that this historic approval could be achieved in less than two years. Castro Esp\u00edn asserted that although the health context caused by COVID-19 complicates the process and can hinder popular consultation mechanisms on this norm, \u201cthe legislative agenda is not
