Cuba is prepared to \u201ctake advantage of any economic opening that may exist with the United States.\u201d This was stated by Cuban Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of <\/span>Economy<\/span><\/a> Alejandro Gil Fern\u00e1ndez this Thursday at a press conference.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf that context occurs, we\u2019ll take advantage of it,\u201d said Gil Fern\u00e1ndez, who, however, clarified that whether this happens does not depend on the Cuban government, but rather on Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe elimination of the <\/span>blockade<\/span><\/a>, of the measures imposed by Trump, would favor a more favorable scenario for Cuba and the United States, but it does not depend on us. What we demand is that all the absurd restrictions that weigh on our country and that deprive our people of a normal relationship with the U.S. people be lifted,\u201d commented the deputy prime minister, who reaffirmed the possibilities of exchange between both nations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have the possibility of exporting to the United States. The U.S. government is depriving its own citizens of Cuban products that are in high demand in the world, such as cigars and rum, and that we would be able to supply. And we are also able to acquire over there supplies and products for our economy. It would be a bilateral trade in favor of both peoples,\u201d he pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Gil Fern\u00e1ndez regretted that, even with the arrival of a new administration to the White House, \u201cthe blockade has not moved a millimeter\u201d and all the restrictions and measures taken by the previous government remain in force, even during the <\/span>COVID-19<\/span><\/a> pandemic, which he described as \u201ccruel\u201d and \u201cinhuman.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUntil now, in more than four months of 2021, we continue working without any modification of the blockade. Let\u2019s hope it will not be like that in the future, but if it continues to be the case, we are also ready for that scenario,\u201d he said, and added that in that case the Cuban economy \u201cwill continue to face this onslaught, always with a vision of social justice and attention to the most vulnerable. That spirit will not move one millimeter either in any of the scenarios that we have to face in the present or in the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
