U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said this Monday that it is a \u201cgrievous mistake\u201d to accuse the United States of being behind the protests in Cuba. They are the \u201creflection,\u201d he said, of a people \u201cdeeply tired,\u201d tired of \u201cthe mismanagement and repression\u201d of the Cuban authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Blinken made those statements in response to those of Cuban President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel, according to which mercenaries paid by the United States government had been in charge of organizing the protests.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be a grievous mistake on the part of the Cuban regime to interpret what is happening in dozens of towns as a result of [an action by] the United States,\u201d Blinken said at a press conference, in which he also referred to the situation in Haiti, urging to hold free elections.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Blinken, the protests in Cuba are due to the fact that the Cuban people \u201care deeply tired,\u201d \u201ctired of the mismanagement of the Cuban economy, tired of the lack of adequate food, and of course, inadequate response to the COVID pandemic\u201d by the authorities. \u201cThey are a reflection of the Cuban people, not the United States or a foreign actor,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n
