{"id":241527,"date":"2021-07-15T11:12:57","date_gmt":"2021-07-15T15:12:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=241527"},"modified":"2021-07-15T11:12:57","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T15:12:57","slug":"alejandro-mayorkas-if-you-take-to-the-sea-you-will-not-come-to-the-united-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/alejandro-mayorkas-if-you-take-to-the-sea-you-will-not-come-to-the-united-states\/","title":{"rendered":"Alejandro Mayorkas: \u201cif you take to the sea, you will not come to the United States\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People fleeing Cuba and Haiti in boats or other maritime means will not be able to enter the United States even if they show fear of being persecuted or tortured in their countries of origin, warned Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLet me be clear: if you take to the sea, you will not come to the United States,\u201d Mayorkas said, highlighting the dangers of crossing the Caribbean Sea and the Straits of Florida in unsafe vessels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayorkas said that those trying to reach the United States by sea will be intercepted by the Coast Guard and immediately returned to their countries of origin. Even if asylum seekers manage to get interviews with U.S. officials, he added, they will not be allowed to set foot on U.S. soil, regardless of the outcome of the process. \u201cIf individuals make, establish a well-founded fear of persecution or torture, they are referred to third countries for resettlement,&#8221; Mayorkas said. And once again he was emphatic: \u201cThey will not enter the United States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DHS chief warns Cubans against migrating by sea\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RdBDJ6zNKhU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refugee advocates denounced Mayorkas\u2019s comments as undermining the Biden administration\u2019s goal of expanding humanitarian immigration programs discontinued by former President Trump. \u201cThe U.S. government shouldn\u2019t be using this system of off-shore processing to evade our refugee protection laws,\u201d said Kennji Kizuka, associate director of Human Rights First. \u201cThey should allow people to land in the United States and go through their full asylum proceedings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayorkas said that so far the United States has not detected a \u201csurge\u201d in maritime interdictions of Cubans and Haitians. So far this fiscal year, 470 Cubans and 313 Haitians have been found at sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past fiscal year, 49 Cubans and 430 Haitians were intercepted by the Coast Guard. These maritime interdictions pale in comparison to the number of Cuban and Haitian migrants detained by the United States along the border with Mexico. In May, the last month for which statistics are available, 2,800 Haitians and 2,600 Cubans were found along the southern border.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S.
