In judicial jargon we call it \u2018summary process,\u2019 it is the equivalent of \u2018abbreviated proceeding,\u2019 they can be found in various laws around the world,\u201d said Rub\u00e9n Remigio Ferro, president of the Supreme People\u2019s Court (TSP), in a press conference with the accredited national and foreign media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ferro also pointed out that there is a matrix \u201cthat speaks of an avalanche of judicial cases,\u201d which, he said, is not true either. In this regard, he reported that as of this Friday, \u201conly 19 judicial processes, involving 59 people, had reached the courts,\u201d the official Cubadebate website <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cubadebate.cu\/noticias\/2021\/07\/24\/como-avanzan-las-investigaciones-penales-en-cuba-tras-los-sucesos-del-11-de-julio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specified<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the president of the TSP, the trials \u201care being held in accordance with the provisions of the law,\u201d which include \u201cthe right to defense, to appoint lawyers, something that has also been said that the accused are not allowed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor this type of proceedings, the law establishes that the subject decides whether or not to appoint a lawyer to defend him at the trial, or he defends himself. The only reference to those arrested are the lists that independent activist groups and organizations have compiled and disseminated on social networks, according to which there are more than 500 detainees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cubalex lawyers\u2019 NGO, for example, has released a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fb.watch\/6YcQHMgMqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preliminary list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of detainees that until July 21 included 584 names, of which it was confirmed that 150 were arrested and 91 were released, the Spanish agency EFE reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this regard, Pe\u00f1a Ojeda <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cubadebate.cu\/noticias\/2021\/07\/24\/como-avanzan-las-investigaciones-penales-en-cuba-tras-los-sucesos-del-11-de-julio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pointed out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201cthrough the networks, although people have not addressed the Attorney General\u2019s Office directly, based on the monitoring\u00a0 that the body carries out, we have captured information and there are people who have been summoned.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are people who have filed complaints, they are being investigated through the procedure we have in our body, they will be referred and of course, we will give them an answer,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Treatment of minors<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the press conference this Saturday, the Cuban legal authorities confirmed that there are minors under judicial investigation, who receive \u201cdifferential treatment\u201d due to their condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pe\u00f1a explained that the detained minors \u201chave been few and some were even taken to the police in the company of their parents,\u201d according <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acn.cu\/cuba\/82542-fiscal-general-de-cuba-asegura-que-han-sido-liberados-algunos-participantes-de-disturbios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the official press. In the country it is not a crime to think differently, it is not a crime, it is a right. We are not troglodytes,\u201d stressed the president of the TSP, while the Attorney General added that \u201cit is not what corresponds\u201d yet since the investigations are still ongoing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pe\u00f1a Ojeda pointed out that a part of those arrested are under precautionary measure of provisional imprisonment and others with non-detention measures, at the same time that several individuals have also been released without charges, \u201cbecause their situation was clarified by the criminal investigation bodies,\u201d Cubadebate said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, she said that \u201cwithin the law\u201d in the most serious cases they will act \u201cseverely,\u201d \u201cwhere it is shown that people organized, promoted or financed the events that affected collective security, legal security and citizen tranquility.
