And that gives me a lot of peace of mind,\u201d the author said in an interview with EFE.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"jw3YAFY451\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/culture\/literature\/padura-i-dont-like-radical-postures-at-all\/\">Padura: \u201cI don\u2019t like radical postures at all\u201d<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Padura: \u201cI don\u2019t like radical postures at all\u201d&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/culture\/literature\/padura-i-dont-like-radical-postures-at-all\/embed\/#?secret=H5kxRxuPmb#?secret=jw3YAFY451\" data-secret=\"jw3YAFY451\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At his family home in the Havana neighborhood of Mantilla, three weeks after thousands of people took to the streets of the country to protest the scarcity and demand freedom, Padura reflects on the extreme polarization that the island is experiencing, about which he hopes that \u201cit can be resolved among Cubans,\u201d including those in exile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith some frequency, I receive attacks from one extreme and the other, because I try to be fair and speak of truths about which there is a certain consensus. It is already known that the truth is not absolute, what is absolute is the lie. And in none of my texts, or in my novels or journalistic works, do I need a lie to talk about Cuba,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it is that the also academician of the Language considers that \u201cwhen someone wants to criticize Cuba they don\u2019t have to exaggerate, they only have to tell the truth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m very at peace with myself, I cannot satisfy all positions, I don\u2019t want to put myself in any extreme, I am very afraid of fundamentalisms and extremes because they start from the fact that their reason is the only possible reason, and I believe that there is always more than one reason and it\u2019s necessary for there to be a dialogue between these reasons,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/july-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caught Padura watching the Eurocup. \u201cSuddenly the transmission is cut off and the president (Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel) starts speaking and I find out what is happening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly after, the authorities blocked access to the Internet and the information that came in was confusing and \u201cvery distorted, very partial, very aggressive in some cases and it was difficult to find out what was happening,\u201d he recalled.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Ho1p56ATby\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/cuba-protestas-en-las-calles\/\">Cuba: protestas en las calles<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abCuba: protestas en las calles\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/cuba-protestas-en-las-calles\/embed\/#?secret=JEUp513Pp5#?secret=Ho1p56ATby\" data-secret=\"Ho1p56ATby\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His first sensation, which he described the week after the demonstrations in a text published on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Joven Cuba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platform, \u201cwas that there had been a scream that came from the entrails of a society that demanded other ways of managing life in a meaningful way in general, and that is where the economic, the social, the political comes in\u2026.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unjustified delay in economic reforms generated \u201csomething that is evident\u201d: the growth of inequalities and poverty, reflected in the novel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La transparencia del tiempo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, Padura mentions very poor settlements in Havana in which \u201cyou realize that this is not the country for which we have worked, which we have dreamed, for which so many sacrifices have been made. We must find solutions for these people\u2026.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The demonstrations, in his opinion, channeled the weariness of waiting for a prosperity that never comes and evidenced the lack of communication between power and how citizens feel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo much so that I think they were surprised by that demonstration because it was not that some people had started shouting something in a queue, it is that in many parts of the country there were people who came out to ask for things, to ask for freedom for example, and it is very serious when people scream for freedom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The writer is concerned that this feeling \u201cis not understood and processed in the best way, because there is a social magma in which there are these intolerances and extremes of which we spoke at the beginning that may be the ones that prevail and it would be the worst.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe violent responses are not at all the cure that this country is needing, which is not the same as it was until 15 days ago. It is a different country and you have to handle it in a different way,\u201d he affirmed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also points out that what happened was already in the making, as demonstrated by the concentration of young creators on November 27 before the Cuban Ministry of Culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere they spoke of the need for a dialogue that in the end was left in a few words and very few solutions, and when people ask for freedom of expression, thought, opinion, they are asking for something that belongs to them, something that I don\u2019t think can be denied to them in any system or in any country,\u201d the author emphasized.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"GQIkJGMDAp\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/bachelet-y-padura-se-pronuncian-sobre-las-protestas-en-cuba\/\">Bachelet y Padura se pronuncian sobre las protestas en Cuba<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abBachelet y Padura se pronuncian sobre las protestas en Cuba\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/bachelet-y-padura-se-pronuncian-sobre-las-protestas-en-cuba\/embed\/#?secret=Nq7OsqmQfN#?secret=GQIkJGMDAp\" data-secret=\"GQIkJGMDAp\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding all those young people who protested on July 11, Padura warns that the \u201cless desirable\u201d alternative is for them to be marginalized or \u201ceven imprisoned for their social or political position\u201d and that due to the prolonged \u201cbleeding\u201d suffered by the island many \u2014 among them the most prepared \u2014end up leaving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The author, who in 1996 became the first \u201cindependent writer\u201d in Cuba, believes that what happened now will be reflected in his literature, although \u201cperhaps not directly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have tried to practice my independence and my freedom for many years. I think that for any creator the need for freedom of expression and thought is fundamental,\u201d although with limits regarding \u201chomophobic, xenophobic attitudes, attitudes that are somehow
