Cuba will begin to administer the Chinese Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine, along with a booster dose of the Cuban Soberana Plus, in <\/span>Cienfuegos<\/span><\/a> province, one of the territories most affected by the pandemic in recent weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n

This will be the first foreign-manufactured vaccine to be applied on the island, which has three of its own immunogens <\/span>already approved for emergency use<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The director of the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV), Dr. Vicente V\u00e9rez, <\/span>told<\/span><\/a> the state Agencia Cubana de Noticias (ACN) news agency that this Sunday Cienfuegos residents aged 19 and over who have not been vaccinated would start being vaccinated with the two doses of Sinopharm.<\/span><\/p>\n

Twenty-one days after the second dose \u2014 the same interval between the two initial administrations \u2014 the booster dose of Soberana Plus will be injected, the source said.<\/span><\/p>\n

V\u00e9rez added that the objective is to immunize the population in the face of more contagious variants of the coronavirus that, in the case of this province, have exceeded a thousand infections for several days in a row. In addition, he said that it is expected that groups in pediatric ages of 12 to 18 years of age will be vaccinated in September.<\/span><\/p>\n
