{"id":245760,"date":"2021-11-12T16:57:47","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T21:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=245760"},"modified":"2021-11-12T16:57:47","modified_gmt":"2021-11-12T21:57:47","slug":"world-personalities-take-sides-in-two-letters-on-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/world-personalities-take-sides-in-two-letters-on-cuba\/","title":{"rendered":"World personalities take sides in two letters on Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World personalities have taken sides on Cuba and the current situation that the country is going through with the increase of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/us-embargo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. embargo <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and with regard to the opposition march called by the Archipi\u00e9lago group for next November 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These days two letters have been released with different projections on the current Cuban context, which have been endorsed indistinctly by intellectuals, politicians, artists, journalists and other well-known figures, in accordance with their political projection and appreciation of the island\u2019s reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A letter dated this November 10 and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cubadebate.cu\/especiales\/2021\/11\/10\/personalidades-del-mundo-firman-carta-a-la-comunidad-internacional-cesen-el-bloqueo-y-las-acciones-desestabilizadoras-contra-cuba\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among other means, by the official website Cubadebate, denounces the U.S. government\u2019s blockade policy toward Cuba and Washington\u2019s support for the opposition and internal subversion in the Caribbean country \u201cwith the sole purpose of ending the current political system and establishing one that responds to its unique interests.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This letter \u2014 an initiative of Spanish-French journalist Ignacio Ramonet, Colombian writer based in France Hernando Calvo Ospina, Argentine sociologist Atilio Bor\u00f3n, and Mexican philosopher Fernando Buen Abad \u2014 has been signed by more than a hundred figures, including former presidents Dilma Roussef (Brazil) and Rafael Correa (Ecuador), Nobel Peace Prize Adolfo P\u00e9rez Esquivel (Argentina), musician Chico Buarque (Brazil) and Beinusz Smukler, from the American Association of Jurists (U.S.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It asserts that the objective of the U.S. embargo and its most recent measures \u201chas not changed: to suffocate the Cuban economy and cause suffering to its population so that it revolts against the revolutionary government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fignacio.ramonet%2Fposts%2F4758075004215068&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"526\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the letter affirms that \u201cfor decades the U.S. government has been investing millions of dollars in the creation of \u2018dissidents,\u2019 of \u2018opponents,\u2019 of all kinds, irrelevant within Cuba but praised by the international press,\u201d who \u201cfeel supported and protected by Washington, and using as a flag the difficult economic situation due to the blockade (a situation increased by COVID, as in all other nations), they call for subversive demonstrations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey do so disregarding the laws in force that prohibit any attack on the current political system, as is logical in all the states of the world. And much more when it is incited by a foreign power,\u201d assert the signatories, according to which, with its policy, the United States seeks to\u201d substantiate the application of the criminal blockade\u201d and \u201cCuba\u2019s isolation, one of the primary objectives being that the European Union break its relations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In closing, they call on the White House to end the embargo and stop \u201cits attempts to destabilize a nation that has never taken action against its security at any time; that much less has interfered in its internal affairs, nor calling on the American public to subvert the established order, despite the multiple and serious internal social problems this world power has.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, about 80 international personalities opposed to the Havana government publicly supported \u201cthe Cuban people in their fight for freedom and democracy\u201d as well as the right to demonstrate peacefully on November 15, as announced by the organizers from the Archipi\u00e9lago opposition platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a letter headed by Nobel Prize for Literature Mario Vargas Llosa and cited by the Spanish agency EFE, former presidents, politicians, representatives of the cultural world and journalists assure that Cubans \u201chave the right to choose their future,\u201d since \u201ctheir demands are legitimate and necessary for the construction of the rule of law on the island.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">El premio Nobel Mario Vargas Llosa, junto a m\u00faltiples src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The signatories base themselves on \u201cinternational law, the Inter-American Democratic Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\u201d and also accompany \u201cthe request for the release of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, especially those arrested for peaceful demonstrations on July 11th.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter emphasizes that \u201csince 1952, Cubans have not participated in free elections and several generations have been persecuted for the exercise of journalism and freedom of expression, as have all kinds of human rights activists within the island,\u201d while affirming that \u201cthe people of Cuba raised a cry for freedom and democracy on July 11, showing the international community that Cubans are standing up in the struggle for the conquest of their rights and the construction of a democracy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to its organizers, the civic march \u201cfor change\u201d called for November 15 aims to demonstrate against violence and demand the release of those imprisoned for participating in the anti-government protests of July 11.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cuban government, for its part, has considered it illegal and \u201ca provocation\u201d framed in the strategy of \u201cregime change\u201d for Cuba \u201crehearsed in other countries\u201d by the United States and has exposed through official media links of some of its organizers with personalities and organizations that have advocated the overthrow of the Cuban government for many
