studying complete ban of child marriages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba is studying the complete prohibition of child marriages through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/family-code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a legal reform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that would eliminate an exception that allows girls to marry from the age of 14 and boys from the age of 16.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Press media report that the latest version of the draft of the new Family Code eliminates this exceptional authorization contemplated in the 1975 code and that had made dozens of child marriages possible in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vice president of the Cuban Union of Jurists (UNJC), Yamila Gonz\u00e1lez Ferrer, a member of the drafting commission of the new Family Code, recently explained on television that this change aims to end some \u201charmful\u201d exceptions for the development of minors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also highlighted a specific problem for women. \u201cWe are talking about girls between the ages of 14 and 18 who marry men who are twice or triple their age and, from there, drop out of school, become pregnant, become economically dependent,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"LblYnMKolB\"><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cubadebate.cu\/noticias\/2021\/11\/17\/codigo-de-las-familias-que-cambio-tras-las-consultas-especializadas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indicated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the Cuban Council of Ministers has already approved the new code and that the bill is now in the National Assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Demographic Yearbook of Cuba 2021 of the National Office of Statistics and Information, last year 656 underage girls and 89 boys were married on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Child marriage is considered by UNICEF \u200b\u200ba \u201cviolation of human rights\u201d and it does not follow
