{"id":246406,"date":"2021-11-30T10:35:11","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=246406"},"modified":"2021-11-30T10:35:11","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:35:11","slug":"leonardo-padura-exile-is-one-of-the-greatest-dramas-for-cubans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/leonardo-padura-exile-is-one-of-the-greatest-dramas-for-cubans\/","title":{"rendered":"Leonardo Padura: exile is one of the greatest dramas for Cubans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exile is one of the great dramas of a generation of Cubans that grew up after 1959, said the Havana writer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/leonardo-padura\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leonardo Padura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this Sunday in his participation in the Guadalajara International Book Fair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are political, economic, family reasons\u2026all the possibilities to justify the decision to stay or leave Cuba, but it has been one of the great dramas of my generation, it is a drama that unfortunately continues to unfold in Cuba,\u201d he said in a talk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Padura (Havana, 1955) is one of the main figures of the 35th edition of the FIL, considered the most important Spanish-speaking literary events, where he held a dialogue with his readers about his new novel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Como polvo en el viento<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which he portrays the story of a group of friends divided by exile.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Conversaci\u00f3n sobre Como polvo en el viento\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bZONFxqYvto?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The writer pointed out that his generation is the first that had access to a university education, but also the one that was marked by a polarization about the then recently established Fidel Castro regime. Some of them decided to leave the country due to their dissatisfaction with the way of life imposed by the regime, others stayed in the country despite their precariousness and difficulties to survive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll the reasons for leaving Cuba are valid and all the reasons for staying are also valid,\u201d according to one of his characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The generation that Padura had reflected in some of his novels is now the protagonist of his new book, a choral story in which the plot revolves around the positions held by a group of friends called \u201cEl Clan\u201d to which chance leads them to different parts of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI knew that there was a space in that reflection that I was missing and that was to see it from other shores, from different shores, it is not a novel in which I make an analysis of what the diaspora has meant in Cuba unlike <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El hombre que amaba los perros<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which there is a more thoughtful and researched look regarding this,\u201d he pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is \u201ca more visceral than rational novel,\u201d as Padura defined this work, since the stories \u201ccame from within,\u201d of what he lived over decades listening, watching and living with friends and family who decided to stay but also those who decided to go to places as common as Miami, the United States or Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the author of the crime novel saga starring detective Mario Conde, the Cuban diaspora \u201chas not stopped\u201d because those who have the opportunity to educate themselves \u201cfind a roof\u201d in the country that forces them to go out in search of a better life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The writer assured that there is no way to be Cuban even for those who decided to stay in the country, as there are many positions regarding the reality that exists there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExile is not experienced in the same way in a city like Miami or in Tacoma, the United States or Madrid or Barcelona, \u200b\u200bthe most attractive part of the preparation of this novel is that research, many of these stories I knew from having had them close by, this anguish of exile and of the different ways of behaving,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Qd1joctXjk\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/culture\/literature\/padura-presents-his-reedited-novels-at-havana-book-fair\/\">Padura presents his reedited novels at Havana Book Fair<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Padura presents his reedited novels at Havana Book Fair&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/culture\/literature\/padura-presents-his-reedited-novels-at-havana-book-fair\/embed\/#?secret=cTSzfkjleR#?secret=Qd1joctXjk\" data-secret=\"Qd1joctXjk\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Padura received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lpm-editores.com.br\/site\/default.asp?TroncoID=805135&amp;SecaoID=0&amp;SubsecaoID=0&amp;Template=..\/livros\/layout_autor.asp&amp;AutorID=648153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carlos Fuentes Medal<\/a> from the author\u2019s widow, Silvia Lemus, an award that had to be postponed last year, because the FIL was carried out virtually due to the sanitary restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
