{"id":246777,"date":"2021-12-10T08:26:16","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T13:26:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=246777"},"modified":"2021-12-10T08:26:16","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T13:26:16","slug":"democratic-senator-criticizes-biden-administrations-cuba-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/democratic-senator-criticizes-biden-administrations-cuba-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Democratic senator criticizes Biden administration\u2019s Cuba policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Democrat Patrick Leahy (D-VT) delivered a speech this Wednesday in the Senate condemning the White House policy toward Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs someone who has observed the evolution of relations between the United States and Cuba for nearly 50 years, I find the situation between our two countries today bewildering, tragic, and exasperating,\u201d said the 81-year-old senator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leahy said that six decades of sanctions, isolation and threats had not achieved any strategic objective for the United States. \u201cThis administration\u2019s policy, so far, has been dictated by a tiny but vocal constituency in this country that has always opposed U.S. engagement with Cuba,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey have done this for decades, but that policy, history has shown, is doomed to failure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leahy denounced the failure to meet deadlines at the State Department, like a review of Trump\u2019s policy in re-designating Cuba as a sponsor of terrorism. \u201cWhatever became of the review?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe COVID pandemic provided an obvious opportunity for cooperation between American and Cuban scientists,\u201d Leahy said. \u201cThat opportunity, like so many others over the years, was squandered due to politics, distrust, and spite.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remittances to Cuba have been restricted by the Treasury Department under President Biden, another Trump administration policy that Leahy has also opposed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShouldn\u2019t Cuban Americans have the right to decide for themselves whether to send their own money to their relatives, rather than having that decision dictated by the White House?\u201d he asked. \u201cRemittances help Cubans be less dependent on the government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5zN03yFpSC\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/important-democrat-senator-demands-active-policy-towards-cuba-from-biden\/\">Important Democrat senator demands active policy towards Cuba from Biden<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Important Democrat senator demands active policy towards Cuba from Biden&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/important-democrat-senator-demands-active-policy-towards-cuba-from-biden\/embed\/#?secret=hOW93F3Rbd#?secret=5zN03yFpSC\" data-secret=\"5zN03yFpSC\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe White House has repeatedly said that \u2018democracy and human rights\u2019 are at the core of its policy toward Cuba,\u201d he added. \u201cI have asked, but I have no idea what the administration\u2019s practical objectives are in Cuba, or how it proposes to achieve them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The senator called on President Biden to change the course on Cuba and re-implement President Obama\u2019s policies of easing sanctions and fostering bilateral dialogue. \u201cWhile we maintain an intricate web of unilateral sanctions that every nation in this hemisphere opposes, the Russians and Chinese are aggressively filling the vacuum as anyone who visits Cuba today can readily see,\u201d he said, referring to the various trade agreements between the three countries and the projects that China has led on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 1999, Leahy has traveled to Cuba several times with his wife as part of multiple congressional delegations. \u201cThis administration has had ten months to demonstrate that continuing the failed Trump policy of trying to bludgeon the Cuban authorities into submission can produce positive results,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAre we going to waste another year and another after that? I hope not, but that is what will happen if the White House does not change course and show the kind of thoughtful leadership on Cuba that we saw during the Obama administration, and that was welcomed by a large majority of the American people.
