We urge you to take immediate humanitarian actions \u2013 as the United Nations has urged repeatedly \u2013 to suspend U.S. regulations that prevent food, medicine, and other humanitarian assistance from reaching the Cuban people,\u201d the signatories, 114 in all, asked <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe also support a more comprehensive shift to deepen engagement with Cuba and move towards normalization of U.S.-Cuba relations,\u201d the document added.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEWS: 114 Members of Congress, including 18 committee chairs\u2014led by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepGregoryMeeks?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepGregoryMeeks<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepBarbaraLee?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepBarbaraLee<\/a> @RepBobbyRush and me\u2014are calling for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@POTUS<\/a> Biden to support the human rights and humanitarian needs of the Cuban people. In the middle of the following year, the embassies were opened in the two capitals, in the midst of several rounds of talks and the signing of agreements and memoranda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe urge your administration to remove the specific licenses required to send medical supplies, such as testing kits and respiratory devices, to Cuba. We also ask that the administration lift all restrictions on banking and financial transactions related to humanitarian aid and suspend end-use verification,\u201d maintain the signing members of Congress, more than half of the Democrats in the House of Representatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile the embargo allows for the shipment of humanitarian aid, in practice, licensing requirements, end-use verification, restrictions on the banking sector, and fear of unknowingly running afoul of U.S. law severely complicate sending humanitarian aid to Cuba, from other countries as well as from the United States,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lee.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/lee-mcgovern-meeks-rush-lead-114-members-of-congress-calling-for-biden-administration-to-support-human-rights-and-humanitarian-needs-in-cuba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the letter affirms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it underlines: \u201cWe ask you to remove all restrictions on family remittances, allowing Cuban Americans to help their families and improve their standard of living, and the restrictions on non-family (donative) remittances, allowing nonprofits and faith groups to provide humanitarian assistance and start-up capital for Cuban entrepreneurs and civil society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are still waiting for action based on the recommendations from the Remittance Working Group you established in the wake of the July 11th\u00a0protests, tasked with expediting a review within 30 days of how to send remittances directly to the Cuban people,\u201d recall the Democratic representatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&#039;All eyes on Cuba&#039; : How Cuban Americans see U.S. role in Cuba&#039;s struggle for democracy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/81a2rwZG7ug?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDespite concerns over Cuba\u2019s government obtaining revenue from remittances, the government captures less revenue from remittances than in the past due to changes initiated in July 2020 and much of the government\u2019s revenue from remittances is channeled to essential food, fuel, and goods imports for Cubans who do not have family abroad, many of them in marginalized communities,\u201d the letter continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMoreover, the U.S. government does not restrict remittances to most of the countries targeted by U.S. sanctions. For example, your administration restarted the flow of remittances through Western Union to Afghanistan, and last week you now allow personal and family remittances through financial institutions, showing you are aware of the importance that remittance channels have for countries facing humanitarian and economic crises,\u201d it added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter is signed, among others, by members of Congress Barbara Lee, James P. McGovern, Gregory Meeks, and Bobby Rush. This initiative has not been reciprocated so far in the Senate, while the White House has not issued comments on it either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Obama Administration&#8217;s Cuba policy was very popular, not only among Americans in general but also within the Cuban American community.,\u201d said Angelica Salazar of ACERE, Alliance for Cuba Engagement and Respect, a solidarity group that seeks to end the blockade against Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis letter is an important breakthrough on Capitol Hill and will hopefully spur President Biden to fulfill his campaign promise to normalize relations with Cuba,\u201d the activist said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is the largest group of legislators to take a position in favor of relations with the island.
