{"id":251473,"date":"2022-04-12T17:04:16","date_gmt":"2022-04-12T21:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=251473"},"modified":"2022-04-12T17:04:16","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T21:04:16","slug":"2021-was-one-of-the-worst-years-for-public-health-in-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/2021-was-one-of-the-worst-years-for-public-health-in-cuba\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 was one of the worst years for public health in Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuban Minister of Public Health Jos\u00e9 \u00c1ngel Portal acknowledged this Saturday that 2021 was the \u201chardest\u201d year for the sector \u201cin recent decades\u201d due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although he highlighted the work of health personnel in that scenario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The minister, quoted by the official media <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cubadebate.cu\/noticias\/2022\/04\/09\/ministerio-de-salud-presenta-resultados-del-sector-en-el-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cubadebate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recalled that the circulation of the Delta variant of the coronavirus \u2014 whose first case in the country was detected in March 2020 \u2014 led to a complex epidemiological panorama during the past July and August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portal considered the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/coronavirus\/vaccines-cuban-government-wants-to-speed-up-administration-of-boosters-against-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high level of immunization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Cuban population, where nearly 90% of the 11.2 million inhabitants have at least one dose of the three nationally produced COVID-19 vaccines, as an advance in the health system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he blamed the crisis generated by the pandemic and the \u201cstrengthening\u201d of the U.S. economic embargo for the \u201csensitive\u201d impact on the \u201cavailability of resources and on population health indicators.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, \u201cthe number of deaths increased in all the country\u2019s territories, with the 60-year-old age group being the most affected,\u201d he said. He added that \u201cCOVID-19 had a negative impact on recorded infant and maternal mortality rates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also recognizes \u201cthe lack of and low coverage of medicines, medical supplies, diagnostic kits, expendable material\u201d and \u201cproblems in the technological infrastructure, obsolescence and breakdown of equipment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portal Miranda highlighted that, in the health sector, the country has around 510,700 workers, of which 69% are women and more than 260,000 are professionals, but hospital management is still showing difficulties due to the measures adopted to confront the pandemic and \u201cit is not possible to cover the demand for elective services,\u201d as a result of the \u201cdeficit of medical and organizational resources and the non-compliance of some services with gaps in the safety of patient
