{"id":252053,"date":"2022-04-27T14:13:32","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T18:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=252053"},"modified":"2022-04-27T14:13:32","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T18:13:32","slug":"cuban-american-organizations-ask-biden-to-reverse-cuba-policies-established-by-trump-administration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/cuban-american-organizations-ask-biden-to-reverse-cuba-policies-established-by-trump-administration\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuban-American organizations ask Biden to reverse Cuba policies established by Trump administration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of organizations made up of Cuban Americans and Americans in favor of a rapprochement between the governments of Cuba and the United States published this week a letter \u2014 open to signatories who want to join in the letter \u2014 that they will soon send to President <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe Biden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> asking him to define actions to reverse the measures and policies established during the Trump administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative, organized by the group Cuban Americans for Engagement (CAFE) together with organizations and Cuban Americans who sign individually, presents \u201ca common concern about the current state of relations between the United States and Cuba\u201d while advocating for measures in favor of relations between the two countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FCafeCubanAmericansForEngagement%2Fposts%2F4853577771431248&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"344\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cafeporcuba.org\/publications\/letter-to-president-biden-from-cuban-american-organizations-and-individuals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> welcomes the resolutions recently taken to restore consular services in Havana, noting that although the changes \u201care limited to an increase in staffing and the resumption of visa processing, they represent an essential distancing from the unjust policy and cruel initiative initiated by the Trump administration, which has brought severe difficulties to the Cuban people.\u201d Along with this, it underlines that there are several campaign promises that have not yet materialized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reversing the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harsh initiatives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Trump\u2019s policy towards Cuba, reestablishing the sending of remittances and enabling Cuban Americans to travel to more provinces on the island, in addition to Havana,\u201d are some of the actions proposed by the U.S. president before assuming his mandate and that have not yet materialized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter underlines that, despite the fact that some private entrepreneurs have undertaken initiatives to circumvent the current restrictions regarding the sending of remittances, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/new-system-for-remittances-to-cuba-enters-clean-money-outside-the-government-says-company\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these proposals, promoted by the group itself,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have not yet achieved the regular flow of remittances that came to exist before for Trump took office. In the same way, they warn that \u201cthe comprehensive nature of the sanctions\u201d makes any operation difficult \u201csince those who tried to send remittances are not clear if they are violating the law. Also, the fees involved are incredibly high for senders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding travel restrictions, the signatories point out that the sanctions still in force make it difficult for Cuban Americans to meet with their families, a situation that mainly affects families who do not live in Havana. On the other hand, it points out that travel restrictions also affect the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-and-u-s-hope-to-establish-better-agricultural-cooperation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">private sectors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of both countries, limited in a satisfactory exchange \u201cthat could empower Cuban civil society\u201d and boost the economy, determined by a serious economic crisis exacerbated by the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe current COVID-19 pandemic has had a great impact on the world economy, and these sanctions have augmented the negative consequences\u201d in the country, immersed in an economic crisis where the Trump administration\u2019s intensification of measures against the Cuban government plays a role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding the events experienced in the last year, the signatories warn: \u201cthe Cuban government does not delude us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group has \u201cclosely followed the July 11 protests on the island and the recent unjust convictions of some of those who participated in them. The vast majority of us have expressed our support for the Cuban people and their right to protest,\u201d but they warn that \u201ca policy of isolation, far from promulgating and educating members of Cuban civil society about human rights, prevents them from learning from the experiences of their civil society counterparts in the United States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"9RlsP5Pct1\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/united-states-and-cuba-release-statements-on-meeting-on-migration-issues\/\">United States United States do not become the closest of allies, \u201cthere are political areas in which both countries can work together to promote mutually beneficial objectives as they have done in the past.\u201d On this point, they highlight issues of interest in which bilateral work is maintained, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/united-states-and-cuba-release-statements-on-meeting-on-migration-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the environment and law enforcement issues in the area of \u200b\u200bdrug control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:
