{"id":252058,"date":"2022-04-27T14:40:57","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T18:40:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=252058"},"modified":"2022-04-27T14:40:57","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T18:40:57","slug":"cuban-foreign-minister-considers-cubas-possible-exclusion-from-summit-of-the-americas-as-serious-historical-setback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/cuban-foreign-minister-considers-cubas-possible-exclusion-from-summit-of-the-americas-as-serious-historical-setback\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuban Foreign Minister considers Cuba\u2019s possible exclusion from Summit of the Americas as \u201cserious historical setback\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodr\u00edguez considered the island\u2019s possible exclusion from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/summit-of-the-americas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ninth Summit of the Americas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will take place next June in the U.S. city of Los Angeles, as a \u201cserious historical setback.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In statements to the press, which were broadcast live on state television, Rodr\u00edguez denounced that the United States government, as the organizer of the summit, has excluded Cuba from the preparations for the meeting, even though it \u201cmisleads\u201d public opinion by saying it hasn\u2019t decided on invitations yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this sense, he urged Secretary of State Antony Blinken to say whether his government will allow or veto Cuba\u2019s participation, and pointed out that, if the absence is confirmed, it would be a \u201cpolitically motivated decision with no other support than false accusations and double standards.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Cuban foreign minister, the United States, as the host country of the meeting, \u201chas no right to impose arbitrary exclusions,\u201d which he considered \u201cundemocratic,\u201d nor to exert \u201cextreme pressure\u201d on \u201cnumerous governments in the region,\u201d which, he said, are opposed to the island being left out of the summit.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrunoRguezP?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BrunoRguezP<\/a>: &quot;El pa\u00eds anfitri\u00f3n de la Cumbre de las Am\u00e9ricas no tiene ning\u00fan derecho a imponer exclusiones arbitrarias&quot;. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HKFFxV70El\">pic.twitter.com\/HKFFxV70El<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Canciller\u00eda de Cuba (@CubaMINREX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CubaMINREX\/status\/1518600440794992640?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 25, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe looming exclusion of Cuba would constitute a serious historical setback in relation to the two previous summits, in which Cuba participated on an equal footing,\u201d commented Rodr\u00edguez, who assured that it would be \u201csurprising\u201d if President Joe Biden \u201cstrays from the policy of the government of which he was already vice president,\u201d which for the first time invited the island to a summit in 2015, and \u201ceven more amazing and paradoxical\u201d that he also not follow in the footsteps of the Trump administration, which also invited the island to the Lima summit in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cuban foreign minister commented that the Los Angeles Summit will have among its central themes health and migration issues, as well as democracy and human rights, on which, he said, regional plans that must be presented are being negotiated \u201cin an opaque manner\u201d in the meeting, and that until now they have remained \u201cwith their backs\u201d to international public opinion and to countries of the continent such as Cuba itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this regard, he regretted that, if finally excluded, the island would not be allowed to contribute to the regional debate on these issues from its perspective, nor cooperate in areas in which it has recognized collaborative experience, such as health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe ninth Summit of the Americas could still be an opportunity if, in an inclusive manner and on equal terms for all countries, it debated, without exclusions and with sincere commitment, the most pressing problems that affect the continent,\u201d he pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Denuncio que gob. In this sense, he denounced its political use by Washington during the pandemic and also as a trigger for the current migratory flow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On this particular issue, he considered it \u201cincoherent\u201d that the U.S. authorities \u201cprivilege\u201d and provide \u201cconstant encouragement\u201d to the irregular migration of Cubans and, at the same time, pressure third countries to impose transit visas and other measures to stop it. Also, that they fail to comply with the bilateral migratory agreements and the quota of 20,000 visas for migrants from the island, despite the \u201cpositive sign\u201d of the recent round of talks on the subject between the two countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On these and other issues, the foreign minister offered the White House the opportunity to \u201cdiscuss\u201d in a \u201cbilateral, multilateral manner and even at the summit itself\u201d in Los Angeles, and, in a general sense, pointed out that Havana\u2019s \u201cgenuine efforts to foster dialogue, links and cooperation\u201d between Latin America and the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, Rodr\u00edguez assured that Washington \u201cshould understand that the Latin American and Caribbean region has changed forever\u201d and \u201cprofoundly\u201d thanked the countries that, he said, maintain a \u201ccourageous position\u201d and advocate that the island
