The figure is almost seven times higher than the same period last year, when the country restricted the entry of travelers due to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garc\u00eda Granda made these statements in a ceremony prior to the International Tourism Fair (FitCuba), which is being held from Tuesday to Saturday in Varadero.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), tourists barely reached 64,712 between January and April 2021, a sharp drop compared to the 983,099 who had arrived during the same period in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"46SPRkBbkU\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuban-government-highlights-tourisms-gradual-recovery-trend\/\">Cuban government highlights tourism\u2019s \u201cgradual recovery trend\u201d<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Cuban government highlights tourism\u2019s \u201cgradual recovery trend\u201d&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuban-government-highlights-tourisms-gradual-recovery-trend\/embed\/#?secret=bFB5r0wzZk#?secret=46SPRkBbkU\" data-secret=\"46SPRkBbkU\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe will recover very soon,\u201d said the minister, who was confident that the government\u2019s forecasts of 2.5 million foreign tourists for the year as a whole will be met. \u201cIt is difficult, but we are optimistic,\u201d he said, quoted by EFE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to official calculations, the Cuban economy would receive 1.159 billion dollars if it manages to reach that number of visitors. The state tourism sector expects to end this year with 84,906 hotel rooms, 5.7% more than the previous year, despite the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>THE SECTOR\u2019S RECOVERY\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garc\u00eda Grande indicated that \u201cthe U.S. blockade continues to be a burden for the sector,\u201d but stressed that the Canadian market and some Europeans, including the British, \u201care recovering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Russian market, he continued, will continue to have \u201cthe highest priority,\u201d although at present the flow of travelers has been completely suspended by European sanctions on Moscow after the invasion of Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba, Garc\u00eda Granda added, is working on new ways to connect both countries, since currently Russian airlines cannot cross European airspace. In the same way, he affirmed that several airlines are reactivating routes to Cuba after the stoppage forced by COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this search for travelers, Garc\u00eda Granda and his counterpart from Argentina, Mat\u00edas Lammens, signed a memorandum of collaboration for the development of tourism, according to the Agencia Cubana de Noticias (ACN) news agency.
