Both Otero Alc\u00e1ntara and Castillo are in provisional prison and the prosecution is asking for between seven and ten years in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey have set a date for the trial of Luis and Maykel, May 30 and 31. The lawyers received the notification. On March 8 they opened the trial, so it would take place almost three months later,\u201d Ramos wrote, quoted by the agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"vy3ixaJUA3\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-opposition-artist-discharged-after-a-month-in-havana-hospital\/\">Cuba: opposition artist discharged after a month in Havana hospital<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Cuba: opposition artist discharged after a month in Havana hospital&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-opposition-artist-discharged-after-a-month-in-havana-hospital\/embed\/#?secret=KeXEDLxFxY#?secret=vy3ixaJUA3\" data-secret=\"vy3ixaJUA3\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The activist reiterated her complaint about \u201cthe arbitrariness of the process,\u201d \u201ca trial favorable to power\u201d in her opinion, and expressed confidence that the \u201cpressure\u201d on the Cuban authorities \u201cwill now increase to very high levels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other activists and NGOs criticized the trial of the two Cuban artists and opponents, such as the senior researcher for the Americas of Human Rights Watch (HRW), Juan Pappier, who described the judicial process as a \u201cfarce.\u201d The Cuban Prosecutor\u2019s Office requested last March, according to a letter to which EFE had access, seven and ten years in prison, respectively, for Otero Alc\u00e1ntara and Castillo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otero Alc\u00e1ntara, leader of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/movimiento-san-isidro\/\"><b>San Isidro Movement (MSI)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in jail since July 11, is accused of alleged crimes of insulting the country\u2019s symbols, contempt and public disorder. Amnesty International (AI) considers him a prisoner of conscience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For his part, the rapper Castillo, who has been in prison since May 2021, is responsible, according to the Prosecutor\u2019s Office, for the alleged crimes of contempt, \u201cdefamation of institutions and organizations and of heroes and martyrs,\u201d attack and public disorder. The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has demanded the immediate release of Castillo, since it considers that the process against him is illegal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This trial is not linked to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/protestas-11-de-julio\/\"><b>July 11<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anti-government protests. They are being tried for some controversial events that occurred on April 4, 2021. According to the Spanish news agency, that day Osorbo, co-singer of the song \u201cPatria y vida,\u201d was arrested after a clash with some agents, apparently motivated because his companion was not wearing a mask; after the incident, he fled to Otero Alc\u00e1ntara\u2019s house and shouted slogans against the government from there, according to the Prosecutor\u2019s Office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The singer was not arrested until a month later and has remained in prison ever since. The Prosecutor\u2019s Office also includes in its brief other previous facts that it considers to constitute a crime by the two dissidents. It refers to events such as \u201coffensive writings against the flag\u201d on the networks, photographing himself with the national flag \u201cwhile performing physiological needs\u201d and posting \u201cmemes\u201d on Facebook to \u201cridicule and discredit\u201d the country\u2019s president, prime minister and Parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are also accused of insulting the Cuban president, directly accusing the government online of \u201cthe lack of medical resources\u201d during the pandemic and insulting the Ministry of the Interior and the security forces, among other charges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The case includes three others under investigation: F\u00e9lix Roque Delgado (request for five years in prison for attack), Juslid Justiz Lazo (five years of correctional work with internment for attack) and Reina Sierra Duvergel (three years of correctional work without internment for attack).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EFE\/OnCuba<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Both Otero Alc\u00e1ntara and Castillo are in provisional prison.
