The Cuban government rejected this Monday its formal exclusion from the <\/span>2022 Summit of the Americas<\/b><\/a>, which began this very day in the U.S. city of Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a <\/span>Foreign Ministry statement<\/b><\/a>, Havana affirmed that the United States, \u201cabusing the privilege granted by its status as host country,\u201d excluded Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua from the summit, a decision that it described as \u201cdiscriminatory and unacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After weeks of controversy and criticism, <\/span>Washington finally announced that it would not invite representatives of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua to the meeting, alleging that they do not meet democratic standards, the EFE news agency reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Cuba, this measure is \u201canti-democratic and arbitrary,\u201d and shows that the United States \u201cconceived and uses this high-level dialogue mechanism as an instrument of its hegemonic system in the hemisphere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In Havana\u2019s opinion, \u201cone cannot speak of \u2018The Americas\u2019 without covering all the countries that make up the hemisphere\u201d and the Biden administration \u201crefused to heed the just demands of numerous governments\u201d to change its position regarding Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.<\/span><\/p>\n

The statement recalls that President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel Berm\u00fadez \u201cannounced on May 25 that he would not attend\u201d in what he considered \u201ca firm decision by Cuba if all the countries of the hemisphere were not invited on an equal footing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cuban government also denounced \u201cimmoral pressure, blackmail, threats and dirty deception maneuvers\u201d that it assures some countries in the region have suffered from the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese are usual practices of imperialism that reflect its traditional contempt for our countries,\u201d says the statement, which calls for \u201ccooperation,\u201d \u201csolidarity,\u201d \u201crespect\u201d and \u201csovereignty\u201d for the continent instead of \u201cexclusion,\u201d \u201cmeanness,\u201d \u201carrogance\u201d and \u201csubordination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The statement adds that \u201cCuba has a widely recognized reference of supporting and contributing without reservations with any legitimate proposal for real and concrete solutions to the most pressing problems\u201d of the American continent.<\/span><\/p>\n

The island\u2019s government thanked the shows of support Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua have received in recent days from various countries and considered that the United States \u201cunderestimated the support for Cuba in the region.\u201d It especially thanked the presidents of Mexico, Bolivia and Honduras, Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador, Luis Arce and Xiomara Castro, respectively, for their support, as well as the members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, it stated that \u201cArgentina\u2019s position as president of CELAC expresses the majority opinion of the region against a selective summit, as many governments of South and Central America have expressed in public and in private.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
