{"id":254275,"date":"2022-06-17T16:23:59","date_gmt":"2022-06-17T20:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=254275"},"modified":"2022-06-17T16:23:59","modified_gmt":"2022-06-17T20:23:59","slug":"cuba-recognizes-it-cant-fulfill-its-planned-sugar-exports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-recognizes-it-cant-fulfill-its-planned-sugar-exports\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba recognizes it can\u2019t fulfill its planned sugar exports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cuban state sugar group Azcuba announced this Wednesday that \u201cit will not be able to meet its international commitments\u201d after one of the worst <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/sugar-harvest-in-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>harvests<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the country\u2019s history, which will mainly affect China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The director of communications for Azcuba, Dionis P\u00e9rez, explained at a press conference that, however, \u201cthe delivery of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/sugar-cane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>sugar<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to all Cubans is guaranteed\u201d (about 2.5 kilograms per month per person through the current ration book, in force since 1962).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P\u00e9rez did not provide figures to explain Azcuba\u2019s productive situation, but the results of the 2021-2022 harvest had previously been reported in official media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In mid-May, Azcuba assured the official newspaper <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that only 53% of its initial forecast had been produced.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"zFiJkv9sqs\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/no-good-omens-for-next-cuban-sugar-harvest\/\">No good omens for next Cuban sugar harvest<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;No good omens for next Cuban sugar harvest&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/no-good-omens-for-next-cuban-sugar-harvest\/embed\/#?secret=WRmvAMqn2v#?secret=zFiJkv9sqs\" data-secret=\"zFiJkv9sqs\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the plan presented in December before the National Assembly (unicameral Parliament), the forecast was that the harvest would reach 911,000 tons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, it was possible to calculate that the real harvest was around 431,000 tons, a figure not confirmed by the Cuban state sugar group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plan provided for allocating 500,000 tons for domestic consumption and leaving the remaining 411,000 tons for export.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China is one of the main export markets for Cuban sugar, with an agreement through which the Asian country buys 400,000 tons a year from the island, according to official data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A sector in crisis<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P\u00e9rez admitted at the press conference that \u201cthe sector is in crisis\u201d and mentioned the lack of fuel and fertilizers, the poor condition of the sugar mills where the raw material is processed and of the machinery, as well as the delay in the start of the harvest and the rains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo sugar mill started up in November,\u201d P\u00e9rez said in a meeting with journalists at the headquarters of the business group to present an international congress on sugar and derivatives, scheduled for June 20-24 in Havana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added that there were 20 critical boilers, of the 89 that ground sugarcane in the last harvest and \u201conly 60% of the transport could be used due to lack of resources.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also considered the financial factor, among \u201cthe most influential due to the economic blockade of the United States,\u201d in reference to the sanctions against Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 35 sugar mills that participated in the harvest, which ended on May 20, only three fulfilled their production plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span>sugar industry<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a sector classified as \u201cstrategic\u201d for the Cuban economy, has been going through a crisis for several years with production reduced to just over a million tons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 2020-2021 period, when 38 mills in the country ground cane, only 66% of the previewed plan of 1.2 million tons of sugar was reached.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the triumph of the revolution, Cuba had 156 operating factories. In 1959 they produced 5.6 million tons of sugar and later they rose to 8 million in the best harvests, between 1970 and 1989.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The state
