of that nation to make the sanctions against Cuba more flexible to help the global distribution of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/cuban-vaccine-against-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>COVID-19 vaccines produced on the island<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, international media reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a letter headed by Democratic representative for the state of Massachusetts Ayanna Pressley and by Steve Cohen, of the same party and nominated for Tennessee, the lawmakers praised the review of the restrictions on travel and remittances to the island by the administration of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Joe Biden<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while advocating for bilateral cooperation in public health, according to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/latino\/3526007-26-democrats-call-on-biden-to-expand-vaccine-cooperation-with-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>article<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0published by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs an initial step, we ask that you review U.S. policy towards Cuba in order to facilitate greater global vaccine equity, with a particular focus on ensuring that U.S. sanctions do not impede current or future efforts by Cuba to share <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>COVID-19<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vaccines and related technology and medical support with low-income countries around the world,\u201d the legislators wrote, quoted by the media.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cA group of House Democrats is urging the Biden administration to further soften sanctions against <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Cuba?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Cuba<\/a> to aid distribution of the Caribbean nation\u2019s COVID-19 vaccines worldwide.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NSv2b1Xt7a\">https:\/\/t.co\/NSv2b1Xt7a<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thehill?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@thehill<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Cuba Study Group (@CubaStudyGroup) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CubaStudyGroup\/status\/1537476591567118337?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 16, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a prolonged review of its policy towards the island, the Biden administration has begun to reconsider some of the restrictions imposed on the island during Donald Trump\u2019s presidency, even though Havana considers that what has been announced to date has been \u201cinsufficient\u201d and \u201climited.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the media, the signatory lawmakers expressed that they agree with the approach of their administration that seeks to \u201caddress the humanitarian situation and respond to the needs of the Cuban people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Democrats\u2019 call is also based on the need for COVID-19 vaccines for low-income countries that cannot afford to purchase drugs produced in richer countries on a large scale, or where conditions make widespread distribution of vaccines that require special care, such as refrigeration, difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile over 75 percent of people in high-income countries have received at least one dose, only 10 percent of people in low-income countries have received at least one dose,\u201d the signatories of the missive addressed to the current tenant of the White House said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recalls that Cuba has a vaccination rate against COVID-19 of more than 90%, despite the limitations in importing resources and equipment to develop its own vaccination program, and cites the legislators, according to whom \u201cCuban vaccines, produced at reduced cost with limited infrastructure, could assist the Biden administration\u2019s goal to distribute cheap and effective vaccines worldwide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, they pointed out, \u201cU.S. sanctions on Cuba directly impede these goals, not only by harming the country\u2019s ability to vaccinate its own population but also by placing obstacles in the way of Cuba\u2019s ability to produce and distribute its vaccine to other countries that continue to face shortages.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding the review process of Cuban vaccines by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/world-health-organization-who\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>World Health Organization (WHO)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the lawmakers pointed out that, although the drugs have not received the necessary approval, \u201cCuba and the WHO have met twice to begin the Emergency Use Listing process, and the efficacy of these vaccines has been further demonstrated by sharp declines in COVID-19 cases and deaths in Cuba since the vaccination campaign.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the Democrats asked Biden to address specific policies that make medical cooperation difficult, including Cuba\u2019s removal from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, which, they said, \u201crestricts and intimidates financial institutions from allowing transactions related to medical equipment,\u201d and the addition of Cuban vaccines to the list of vaccines recognized by the United States, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">
