Health authorities in the western Cuban province of <\/span>Artemisa<\/b><\/a>\u00a0denied the existence of cases of <\/span>cholera<\/b><\/a>\u00a0and monkeypox in hospitals in the territory, according to official media reports.<\/span><\/p>\n

Audios recently circulated through WhatsApp about alleged cases of <\/span>monkeypox<\/b><\/a> in the Iv\u00e1n Portuondo Hospital, in the municipality of San Antonio de los Ba\u00f1os, according to <\/span>a note<\/b><\/a> in the local newspaper <\/span>El Artemise\u00f1o<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Odalis Vald\u00e9s, director of that hospital, clarified that there is no case of the disease, nor are any suspected patients reported at the center, the information points out, replicated by other media outlets on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n

The official explained that prevention work is being carried out in the health institution not only for dengue or <\/span>COVID-19<\/b><\/a>. \u201cPromotional actions are being carried out in the wards, which may have led to a misunderstanding of some companion or patient with the use of the mask or the washing of hands, that is, hygienic-epidemiological measures,\u201d she explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

This, however, does not mean that there are cases of monkeypox in the hospital, Vald\u00e9s assured. \u201cWe don\u2019t even have suspected cases. We do not have that incidence, we are simply taking measures to prevent all diseases that can be contagious,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n

In turn, Osmany P\u00e9rez, director of <\/span>public health<\/b><\/a> in the Artemisa municipality of G\u00fcira de Melena, also denied comments about the existence of cases of monkeypox and fulminant cholera in that territory, the information specifies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding monkeypox, he noted that in G\u00fcira de Melena there are 30 contacts of a positive case of this disease detected in the neighboring province of Havana, although he specified that \u201call are asymptomatic, isolated at home and periodically evaluated by the health professionals of the territory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the 30 is a direct contact, and the established protocols are already applied, but with a similar state of health to the rest,\u201d P\u00e9rez pointed out, according to <\/span>El Artemise\u00f1o<\/span><\/i>, while also clarifying that no cases or suspects of fulminant cholera are reported in the municipality.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cuban <\/span>Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP)<\/b><\/a> recently confirmed that the number of people infected in the country with the monkeypox virus had risen to eight, most of them detected in Havana.<\/span><\/p>\n

The data was revealed this week during the usual meeting between Cuban President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel and health experts who address, among other issues, the monitoring of dengue and COVID-19. Until then, only four cases had been reported on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most recent of these corresponded to a <\/span>26-year-old health worker from the province of Cienfuegos<\/b><\/a>, who had direct contact with the third case, from that same territory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Previously, the infection of a 27-year-old woman and those of a 60-year-old Cuban resident in the United States, and a 50-year-old Italian tourist had been reported. Health authorities of that Cuban province confirmed that there are no cases related to these diseases in the territory\u2019s hospitals. They also explained that in the municipality of G\u00fcira de Melena, 30 people who were contacts of a confirmed case of monkeypox detected in the neighboring province of Havana are being
