{"id":263360,"date":"2023-01-10T15:50:21","date_gmt":"2023-01-10T20:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=263360"},"modified":"2023-01-10T15:50:21","modified_gmt":"2023-01-10T20:50:21","slug":"ana-belen-montes-confessed-cuba-spy-released-after-more-than-20-years-in-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/ana-belen-montes-confessed-cuba-spy-released-after-more-than-20-years-in-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"Ana Bel\u00e9n Montes, confessed Cuba spy, released after more than 20 years in prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A former Pentagon information analyst, Ana Bel\u00e9n Montes, an American of Puerto Rican origin, was released this Saturday from a prison in Texas, after serving 21 years of detention for a 25-year sentence, for espionage for Cuba, said the Bureau of Prisons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montes, who pleaded guilty to the charge, thereby avoiding a jury trial, was considered the highest-ranking U.S. official ever proven to have spied for Cuba. \u201cShe knew everything about Cuba,\u201d said an intelligence official at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formally, Montes, then 45, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit espionage after she was accused of using her position as an official of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) to leak information to Havana, both through contacts with Cuban officials, clandestine trips to the island or the use of sophisticated messaging systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The woman began working for the DIA in 1985 and quickly rose to become the agency\u2019s top Cuba analyst. During the trial, prosecutor Ronald L. Her lawyer, Platos Cacheris, a leading specialist in espionage cases, stressed that she had fully cooperated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.17663\/gov.uscourts.dcd.17663.53.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>At the sentencing hearing<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Montes, who was born on a military base in the then Federal Republic of Germany, argued that she had obeyed her conscience and that the United States policy toward Cuba was cruel and unfair. \u201cI felt morally obligated to help the island defend itself from our efforts to impose our values and our political system on it,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When sentencing her, Judge Ricardo Urbina affirmed that she put her fellow American citizens and the \u201cnation as a whole\u201d at risk, for which he decided that Montes be placed under five years of probation, with restricted Internet access and the prohibition of working for governments and contacting foreign agents without permission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Authorities have not reported whether she will remain in the United States or fly to Puerto Rico, where she has family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba never commented on Montes\u2019 work. Just at the beginning of the process, then Foreign Minister Felipe P\u00e9rez Roque said that he felt \u201cdeep respect and admiration\u201d for
