I don\u2019t remember a movie in recent years that has better defined a generation in Cuba than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habana Blues<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film by Benito Zambrano, released in 2005, directly captured the persistent cries of life on the island; the underground scene, its musicians, its public, the separations and that enormous festering wound on the skin of the country: emigration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X Alfonso wonders \u201chow long can a heart last without the beating of believing\u201d in a section of the film\u2019s soundtrack. The theme is \u201cArenas de soledad\u201d and it is one of the most overwhelming songs in the film.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/habana-blues-poster-benito-zambrano-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-263450\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/habana-blues-poster-benito-zambrano-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1813\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/habana-blues-poster-benito-zambrano-1.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/habana-blues-poster-benito-zambrano-1-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/habana-blues-poster-benito-zambrano-1-723x1024.jpg 723w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/habana-blues-poster-benito-zambrano-1-768x1088.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/habana-blues-poster-benito-zambrano-1-1084x1536.jpg 1084w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/habana-blues-poster-benito-zambrano-1-750x1062.jpg 750w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/habana-blues-poster-benito-zambrano-1-1140x1615.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question is repeated and sets the stage for other questions that go through the plot. It is followed by a catalog of songs that assume and put the country in front of its own mirror. Cuba facing Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it was released, the film exposed us. It revealed many of our pains and anxieties as a generation. No half measures. \u201cThis is also your reality, your possible future and you can do whatever you want with them,\u201d Benito Zambrano seems to tell us in overwhelming silence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Varela, Santiago, Polito had done it before, with songs that revealed the scars that existed, which were emerging until they finally became an erupting volcano in a large part of the families, in a large part of Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Habana blues - Arenas de soledad\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ph04pPt1_5o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cArenas de soledad\u201d continues by saying that the interpreter feels trapped by what he has experienced. The song is heard far away, in a fictitious space, but the theme has a lot to manifest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2005 we did not expect a film with the emotional magnitude of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habana Blues<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It took us by surprise in the middle of an age in which there was still room for hope. The concerts, rock and roll, furtive sex, cheap booze, the hopes placed on some university degree to hang on a wall in the living room and at the entrance of our parents\u2019 lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In those years there was still a lot of discovery. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habana Blues<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> arrived and told us with all the harshness extracted from reality that the wind was not in our favor. And that the document hanging in the room could become pure decoration overnight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one had explained it so well to the young people of that time, with so much symbolism. The identification was complete. Snapshot. It was above all because the film was intended for an audience that was on the screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Habaneando\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xX1s9I1iPYE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any of the wonderful creatures of the Cuban underground remained in the film, even if the camera had not captured them. Some came out as extras in a scene that became a tribute. It was the other Cuba, the discourse foreign to the official discourse, life on the dark side of the moon. We were impregnated by the power of music, but above all by the power of words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X sings that he feels trapped by what he has experienced, that we are all tattooed tears of my Habana Blues. Escape plays \u201cCuba Rebeli\u00f3n,\u201d and Tierra Verde asks that we live together as brothers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other side, each one falls under the weight of their emotions. \u201cEveryone has left looking for the way, everything he has loved, everything he has lost.\u201d Those songs tightened the rope of what we were at that time and made us feel part of a generation that was already groping its way, without fully imagining what those songs were advancing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At concerts, the music of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habana Blues<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became an apotheosis. You had to live those nights in which many had not yet discarded the dreams of childhood to understand the magnitude of the moment. And then X Alfonso\u2019s voice is shielded with rock and roll strains and he breathes until he explodes in the middle of the most furious guitar riff when he says that they are going to the sea in silence. He is followed by an orgy of guitars and electric sounds. The soundtrack advances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many ways to evaluate a movie, a record, a book, or any work. But when an artistic episode makes a space in the flow of emotions of a generation, it can be sensed that it is a high-caliber proposal. The test of time, it is known, is not passed by anyone. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habana Blues<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> still dazzles and awes today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film, on the other hand, had the virtue of showing the world artists who, to a large extent, remained in the media and institutional obscurity. Most of those who recorded have already left Cuba. Escape, Porno para Ricardo, Free Hole Negro, Descemer Bueno, Kumar, Qva Libre, among many others that are already names that are also pronounced from other shores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the years, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habana Blues<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems like it was released yesterday.
