{"id":264352,"date":"2023-01-30T17:46:19","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T22:46:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=264352"},"modified":"2023-01-30T17:46:19","modified_gmt":"2023-01-30T22:46:19","slug":"yanis-varoufakis-in-cuba-the-left-must-recover-the-concept-of-freedom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/economy\/cuban-economy\/yanis-varoufakis-in-cuba-the-left-must-recover-the-concept-of-freedom\/","title":{"rendered":"Yanis Varoufakis in Cuba: the left must recover the concept of freedom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/greece-and-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Greek<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0leftist economist and politician Yanis Varoufakis this week prescribed economic reforms to Cuba to \u201cenergize\u201d small enterprises and greater respect for human rights to increase the \u201cstrength\u201d of the revolution, according to a report by the EFE news agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The university professor, former Finance Minister of Greece and founder of the Movement for Democracy in Europe (DiEM25) explained to the Spanish news agency that in recent days he had talks with Cuban Minister of Finance and Prices Meisi Bola\u00f1os, as well as with members of the Bureau Politician of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After his trip to Cuba, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/yanisvaroufakis?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@yanisvaroufakis<\/a> has landed in Mexico for an official visit that will include a meeting with President <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lopezobrador_?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@lopezobrador_<\/a>, in which they will discuss the New Non-Aligned Movement and the campaign to free Julian Assange. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HNI9U8cGth\">pic.twitter.com\/HNI9U8cGth<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; DiEM25 (@DiEM_25) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DiEM_25\/status\/1620025138430513152?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 30, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the political sphere, Varoufakis assured that he had been \u201cvery explicit\u201d when raising the problem of human rights with the Cuban authorities, as denounced by governments and various NGOs, and advocated recovering for the left the concept of freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI approach Cuba in the same way that I do with my friends, with my family\u2026, with everyone with whom I have to cooperate and work with. In a way that is both respectful and critical,\u201d he assured in relation to the differences between the political system on the island and his own ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf someone close to you and with whom you have to cooperate does something wrong, you have to look them in the eye and tell them. And that includes human rights,\u201d added Varoufakis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the NGO Prisoners Defenders in Cuba, there are currently more than a thousand political prisoners, and the Justice 11J group has registered some 700 convictions of the participants in the protests of July 11, 2021, the largest in decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Varoufakis\u2019s opinion, the left must \u201crecover the concept of freedom,\u201d something that he considered was lost in favor of the right in the 20th century \u201cbecause of the gulag and the tendency (of the left) to create concentration camps for its own people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Greek politician was convinced that \u201cthe strength of the Cuban revolution will increase when it treats those who demonstrate against the Cuban government and the PCC as its own people, as potential allies despite disagreements and demonstrations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ECONOMIC REFORMS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the economic field, he first accused the United States for the \u201cdesperate\u201d situation of the island due to the six decades of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/us-embargo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>embargo\/blockade<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After more than two years of severe crisis, Cuba is suffering a tremendous shortage of basic products (food, medicine and fuel), high inflation and depreciation of the peso.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, he denounced the \u201cfinancial terrorism exercised by the United States on Cuba,\u201d in reference to the multiple economic sanctions on the island, and pointed to the adverse international context, with the appreciation of the dollar and the rise in food and energy prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is nothing short of a miracle that Cuba is still standing. I have great admiration for its ability to resist and not give in to the predatory moves of the United States,\u201d he stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Varoufakis indicated that the Cuban authorities can take some measures to improve the situation in the country, such as \u201cenergizing small cooperative enterprises with many degrees of freedom\u201d and
