{"id":264879,"date":"2023-02-11T06:55:55","date_gmt":"2023-02-11T11:55:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=264879"},"modified":"2023-02-11T06:55:55","modified_gmt":"2023-02-11T11:55:55","slug":"international-travelers-to-cuba-almost-tripled-in-january","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/economy\/tourism-in-cuba\/international-travelers-to-cuba-almost-tripled-in-january\/","title":{"rendered":"International travelers to Cuba almost tripled in January"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba received around 246,000 international travelers in January of this year, almost triple the number that arrived on the island in the same period of 2022, according to official media reports this Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The figure represents \u201ca very significant increase compared to the 86,424 who entered in January last year,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2023-02-06\/enero-de-2023-reportan-una-discreta-recuperacion-del-turismo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>said<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the official newspaper <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rebound is mainly due to the \u201capproach of several international travel agencies to the island, which are interested in the Cuba destination,\u201d said this outlet, citing other publications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last December, 236,862 people visited the country, an increase of 452.8% compared to the same month in 2021 \u2014 when the island was still affected by the restrictions of the pandemic \u2014, according to the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), which has not yet published the official figures for this January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of 1,614,087 international travelers arrived in Cuba in 2022. The government had set the goal of 1.7 million tourists in the middle of the year, after lowering its initial forecast of 2.5 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada, Cubans residing abroad, the United States, Spain, Germany and Russia led, in that order, the main groups of international travelers arriving on the island, according to ONEI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba got to receive between 4 and 5 million international travelers in 2018 and 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" second largest income for the gross domestic product (GDP) and the second largest source of foreign currency in Cuba, behind the export of services, mainly health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal set by the government for this year is to receive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/cuba-aspira-a-35-millones-de-turistas-en-2023-a-pesar-de-sus-limitaciones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>3.5 million tourists<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, double the number that arrived in the country in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/economy\/tourism-in-cuba\/cuba-expects-arrival-of-no-less-than-2-5-million-tourists-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minister of Tourism Juan Carlos Garc\u00eda Granda recently assured EFE that this goal is possible, despite the
