I was trying to show, above all, that critics have not been completely fair or profound when it comes to evaluating the films inspired by their works, since they were mostly carried away by the usual prejudice of comparing the achievements of the films with the scope of the literary original. In this way, the book dedicates a chapter to each of these versions and analyzes the artistic interest and cultural legitimacy that inhabits them,\u201d says Joel del R\u00edo, journalist, critic, professor and author of the volume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCriticism was included \u2014 neither diatribes nor panegyrics \u2014 of most of the film adaptations of his stories or novels, or the screenplay of scripts specially written by the author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in each film the achievements of eminent filmmakers stand out, faced with the challenge of re-creating narratives perfectly embedded in their universal resonance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSuch is the case of several recidivist directors such as Mexicans Jaime Humberto Hermosillo (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mar\u00eda de mi coraz\u00f3n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El verano de la se\u00f1ora Forbes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and Arturo Ripstein (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiempo de morir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El coronel no tiene quien le escriba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); Cuban Tom\u00e1s Guti\u00e9rrez Alea (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cartas del parque<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contigo en la distancia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); Mozambican-Brazilian Ruy Guerra (who has been in charge of bringing to the screen <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Er\u00e9ndira<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F\u00e1bula de la bella palomera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Me alquilo para so\u00f1ar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El veneno de la madrugada<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or Colombian Jorge Al\u00ed Triana (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiempo de morir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edipo alcalde<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), who are among the lucky ones who managed to capture on celluloid, albeit fragmentarily, the full understanding of the Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez universe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are numerous Latin American filmmakers,\u201d the author maintains, \u201cwho got the best films from him by making versions of stories created by the Colombian and 1982 Nobel Prize Winner for Literature.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"El coronel no tiene quien le escriba - Tr\u00e1iler\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0HXtbHmDqoI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnusual, overflowing, magical-realistic films such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presagio<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(Luis Alcoriza), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En este pueblo no hay ladrones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(Alberto Isaac), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El gallo de oro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Roberto Gavald\u00f3n), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El a\u00f1o de la peste<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(Felipe Cazals) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La viuda de Montiel\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Miguel Litt\u00edn), who gave color and scope to the film making of our continent in the 1960s and 1970s, when each and every one of them was cataloged as the best effort in cinema to translate prose into images from the Colombian. And if some of the films that I mention are inserted among the best Latin American titles of all time, I don\u2019t know why we should keep repeating the refrain that Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez and cinema make up an ill-matched marriage, as the same writer declared many times. Going through fifty years of Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez cinema means delving into the labyrinths traveled by those who dared to transform verbal-literary signs (short stories, novels, newspaper articles) into cinematographic, visual and sound codes. As I affirm in the introduction, \u2018I hope that after reading this book, the reader-spectator never again allows the undeniable virtues of a book to get in the way of enjoying a film, no matter how inspired it is in this or that literature,\u2019\u201d Del Rio says.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Love In the Time of Cholera - Official Trailer [HD]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lXuxe7dTg2U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his memoirs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vivir para contarla<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2002), Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez recounts in detail the long courtship of his mother, Luisa Santiaga, by his father, Gabriel Eligio, because her parents were opposed to the union since the young man was from the Conservative Party and belonged to a lower social class (he was a telegraph operator). The biography of the Colombian tells that Gabriel Eligio met her at a funeral and gave her a rose with the words \u201cI give you my life in this rose,\u201d then he wrote her a letter, invited her to a dance, and when they went out to dance, he told her \u201cyou don\u2019t have to say yes anymore, because your heart is telling me.\u201d Later, to prevent the romance, Luisa\u2019s parents took her on a long journey through the Andes, but the lovers communicated by mail, by telegraph, and by signals of any kind. Finally, Luisa\u2019s parents agreed, they got married, and several years later Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez would be born, who put the idyllic story told so many times by his parents, in his fifth novel, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love in Times of Cholera<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in the script for the film <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cartas del parque<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which assimilated, without any complexes or prejudices, the world of the melodrama, the romantic song, the radio soap opera and its subsequent substitute, the telenovela.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The confluence between the so-called high and low culture that characterizes the postmodern era is splendidly revealed when Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez confessed his admiration for the Spanish composer Manuel Alejandro, the Cuban or Mexican boleros, and for F\u00e9lix B. Caignet, the author, among other works, of the radio soap opera <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El derecho de nacer<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, widely influential in the Caribbean basin and far beyond. The Colombian even came to recognize the influence of orality and the radio soap opera in his work. Later, in an interview for the newspaper <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Pa\u00eds<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in 1996, he said he was a great admirer of the telenovela as a genre, \u201cbut that the intellectuals have left it in the hands of the inept.\u201d Substance for a telenovela of many chapters was provided by <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love in Times of Cholera<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the tender love story successfully published in 1985, and whose film version would arrive twenty years later. But earlier, in 1988, two episodes of this novel were adapted to cinema, in Brazil and Cuba, with the titles <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F\u00e1bula de la bella palomera<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cartas del parque<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two melodramas focused on the description of unrequited and unhappy love affairs, and that were part of the television series <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amores dif\u00edciles<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fragment of the chapter entitled \u201cCartas del parque: el Tit\u00f3n m\u00e1s rom\u00e1ntico\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Memoria de mis putas tristes -  Tr\u00e1iler\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-YvnuSLKBmM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><b><i>Is this the first time this subject is analyzed in Cuba? How was the research process?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez\u2019s relationship with cinema has been discussed in hundreds of newspaper articles, inside and outside Cuba, but as far as I know, no one has thought of penetrating the writer\u2019s world through cinema inspired by his works and scripts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, throughout the research, dozens of contacts and interrelationships surfaced between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or other of his novels, and all the films he analyzed. After all, it is the same creator, only now seen through the filmmakers who became his accomplices to tell stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It all started in 2003, when I started working at the International Film and TV School of San Antonio de los Ba\u00f1os, founded by Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez in 1986. There I was able to attend several of his visits, and I accessed the workshops he gave once a year. I always admired the writer, and at the School, I was acceding to the very long imprint of his work taken to cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Media Library were all the films and hundreds of articles, essays, monographs and chronicles on each of these works, and how the participation in each one had been. What other projects are you working on now?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, it is the only one. Teaching and the crisis with paper have kept me away from publications since <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La edad de las ilusiones. El cine de Fernando P\u00e9rez<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was published, in 2016, which later came out in an e-book version. In this same format, a history of universal cinema titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El cine siempre: del silente al digital<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which I thought would be a textbook for humanities careers that study this subject, and of course for all those interested, will soon be released.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From that ambitious project, in which I was working for around five or six years, with a pandemic in the middle, to the point that I myself am surprised to have concluded it, an \u201cother\u201d history of cinema was derived; it\u2019s called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presagio de arco\u00edris: Historia del cine con personaje LGBTQ\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and I\u2019ve already delivered the original to the publisher. God willing that within a year, at the next Fair, we can talk about these two books, already published, even if it is not on paper.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
