Nichols<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said this week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cu.usembassy.gov\/es\/observaciones-del-subsecretario-brian-a-nichols-sobre-la-politica-hacia-cuba-en-la-universidad-internacional-de-florida-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>a speech<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Florida International University (FIU), Nichols stated that \u201cpublicly \u2013 and privately in discussions with Cuban officials \u2013 the U.S. government continues to call for the release of political prisoners.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he did not specify if both executives are currently negotiating the possible release of imprisoned opponents, whom Havana does not consider political prisoners, and for whose release international organizations and institutions such as the Catholic Church and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/european-union-eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>the European Union<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have advocated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, he confirmed that the Washington Embassy in Havana \u201chas constant communication with the dissident community on the island, including the families of political prisoners,\u201d whom he described as \u201can incredibly brave group of people, facing extremely difficult conditions.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The official cited NGOs, which, he said, estimate that more than 700 protesters from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/july-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>July 2021 anti-government protests in Cuba<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201care among the more than 1,000 political prisoners currently behind bars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These protesters have been tried and sentenced on the island \u2014 in many cases to long prison terms \u2014 for crimes such as sedition, assault, contempt, public disorder and incitement to commit a crime, after their participation in the protests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The remarks by the Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs take place after last year Washington and Havana had some official contacts after the setback in bilateral relations imposed by the Trump administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, it comes a month after the Nicaraguan government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/mundo\/america-latina\/gobierno-nicaraguense-libera-y-deporta-a-mas-de-200-opositores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>released and deported<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more than 200 opponents to the United States, a move that the State Department described as \u201cpositive and welcome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his presentation at FIU, Nichols also elaborated on the Biden administration\u2019s current policy toward Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that sense, he first mentioned human rights, as well as the establishment of \u201cmeaningful ways to support the Cuban people while limiting benefits\u201d for the Cuban government, which he called a \u201cregime.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one of the topics of the hour, immigration policy, he pointed out that his government has been working \u201cto expand safe and legal migration options.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur Embassy in Havana is now fully open for immigrant visa processing and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has resumed processing under the Cuban Family Reunification Program,\u201d he confirmed.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"M5aSxjf1tb\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/the-rebirth-of-the-parque-de-los-suspiros\/\">The rebirth of the Parque de los Suspiros<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;The rebirth of the Parque de los Suspiros&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/the-rebirth-of-the-parque-de-los-suspiros\/embed\/#?secret=rsb0bnFGRV#?secret=M5aSxjf1tb\" data-secret=\"M5aSxjf1tb\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the official celebrated that the Biden administration took \u201cthe very bold and innovative step of launching a new parole program,\u201d through which up to 30,000 individuals from Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Haiti can enter the United States each month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to him, to date \u201cabout 10,000 Cubans have successfully used the program,\u201d through which \u201cCubans from all walks of life have benefited, including members of the human rights community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, he said, \u201csince the launch of the parole program in particular, the number of Cuban migrants attempting dangerous irregular migration has plummeted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRecognizing it is still early days, we are pleased to see Cuban families choosing these legal options,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, he reiterated that his government supports the emerging Cuban private enterprise, with the aim \u201cto support greater freedom and expand economic opportunities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are working,\u201d he continued, \u201cto expand access to technological services and tools that will enable trailblazing Cuban entrepreneurs to start or grow their businesses and thrive in the global digital economy, which will create jobs and opportunities for the Cuban people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs we implement these measures,\u201d he stressed, \u201cwe will continue to call on the Cuban regime to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms for all Cubans and unconditionally release all political prisoners.\u201d And he made clear the reasons for the talks with the island\u2019s authorities: \u201cTo support the Cuban people and protect our U.S. national interests, we also do have direct engagement with the regime when it is in our interest to do so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSuch engagement includes discussions on migration, scientific and technical cooperation including maritime and aviation safety, and food and animal health protocols.
