{"id":270858,"date":"2023-06-07T10:13:46","date_gmt":"2023-06-07T14:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=270858"},"modified":"2023-06-07T10:13:46","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T14:13:46","slug":"lelo-presents-award-to-bridges-of-love-leader-carlos-lazo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/lelo-presents-award-to-bridges-of-love-leader-carlos-lazo\/","title":{"rendered":"LELO presents award to Bridges of Love leader Carlos Lazo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlos Lazo, the Cuban-American professor and activist against the blockade, received in Seattle, the city where he lives, the \u201cDomingo, Viernes, Jefferson Award\u201d given by the organization <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lelo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legacy of Equality Leadership &amp; Organizing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LELO), based in that city of Washington state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award is given annually to community activists \u201cin recognition of their leadership and their work to create a more humane and just world,\u201d under the premise that \u201cordinary people create extraordinary changes in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cindy Domingo, leader of LELO, during the award ceremony, recognized Lazo for \u201chis qualities as an organizer and his love\u201d and said that \u201che has become one of the most effective voices to bring change to the policy of 60 years of blockade against Cuba, that blockade that has a devastating effect on the Cuban people and on the U.S. people as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Felprofeylaislabella%2Fvideos%2F807948253765557%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI met Carlos more than fifteen years ago,\u201d Domingo said. \u201cWe were in Washington DC on a day of lobbying and action in the U.S. Congress. There was Carlos, as part of a delegation, a veteran of the Iraq War. And I remember that because Carlos came in his military uniform and I asked who is this man. He was there to share his story. At that time Carlos could not visit his children in Cuba because the Bush administration only allowed one family visit to Cuba every three years. How many countries do you know of that the United States only allows one to visit their family once every three years? Since then Carlos has dedicated his energy, his passion and his resources, along with his wife, to his love for Cuba.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For his part, Lazo reciprocated this message and on the Bridges of Love Facebook channel offered his gratitude, recalling a phrase by Mart\u00ed: \u201cduty is fulfilled simply and naturally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, he recognized all the people who make up this movement, who have made it possible, and stressed that the greatest prize is the \u201copportunity to fight every day for the Cuban family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prize is endowed with 100,000 dollars that, according to Lazo, will be dedicated to bringing medical supplies to pediatric hospitals in Cuba, as well as to continue developing and building Bridges of Love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;
