The Cuban government issued this Tuesday a statement rejecting the docking between July 5 and 8 of a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine at the <\/span>naval base that that country has maintained in Guantanamo Bay<\/span><\/a> for 121 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The island\u2019s <\/span>Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX)<\/span><\/a> described the presence of the submarine as a \u201cprovocative escalation by the United States, whose political or strategic motives are unknown,\u201d through a <\/span>text<\/span><\/a> published on its website.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>statement<\/span><\/a> also stresses that the military base \u201chas no strategic or military importance to the United States\u201d and notes that so far there has been \u201cno information\u201d from the U.S. government regarding the \u201cpolitical or strategic reasons\u201d for the submarine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe presence there of a nuclear submarine at this moment forces us to question what is the military reason for the event in this peaceful region of the world, against what objective it is directed and what strategic purpose it pursues,\u201d the Cuban Foreign Ministry said in its statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

The text emphasizes the rejection of \u201cthe U.S. military presence in Cuba and the demand that the illegally occupied territory in the province of Guant\u00e1namo be returned,\u201d referring to the 117 square kilometers currently occupied by the military installation.<\/span><\/p>\n

In turn, it values as a \u201cdanger\u201d the \u201cpresence and circulation of nuclear submarines of the United States armed forces in the nearby Caribbean region.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The MINREX recalls that the United States maintains the naval base in operation \u201cagainst the will of the Cuban people\u201d and considers this decision as a \u201ccolonial remnant of the illegitimate military occupation of our country that began in 1898,\u201d after the U.S. intervention in Cuba\u2019s war of independence against Spain.<\/span><\/p>\n

The statement says that the permanence of the naval base on the eastern tip of the island \u201conly responds to the political objective of trying to violate Cuba\u2019s sovereign rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cuban Foreign Ministry stressed that the military installation has been used in recent decades as a \u201ccenter for the detention, torture and systematic violation of the human rights of dozens of citizens from various countries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Since January 2002, the base has housed a prison in which prisoners from Afghanistan have been held, where most of them accused of terrorism remain to this day, although some have never been tried.<\/span><\/p>\n
