{"id":286131,"date":"2023-08-06T17:14:47","date_gmt":"2023-08-06T21:14:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=286131"},"modified":"2023-08-06T17:14:47","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T21:14:47","slug":"bamboo-bicycles-through-the-streets-of-havana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/bamboo-bicycles-through-the-streets-of-havana\/","title":{"rendered":"Bamboo bicycles through the streets of Havana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the urgent measures to alleviate the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/eco-transportation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transportation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> crisis in Cuba, the Ministry of Transportation (MITRANS) has recently called for a greater use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/bicyclinkg-in-havana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bicycles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an alternative. In this context, a workshop in Havana is manufacturing this type of vehicle, but with special characteristics: its structure is made of bamboo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">V\u00e9lo Cuba, a Cuban cycle mobility enterprise led by women, has been promoting the use of bicycles since 2014 through rental services, tourist routes in the city and social initiatives. In addition, it collaborates with the City Historian Office in the management of the Ha\u2019Bici public bicycle rental service in Old Havana and has a mechanics school for these vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fveloencuba%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02NzE2nKfjDAmTjKP9DDw3fTHh1MRKhJZd3by2mRaHCtFHurVyuDmKrQzGKdbt7BFgl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"792\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in 2022 they decided to undertake the bamboo bike project, which has \u201ca lot of research and productive chaining,\u201d project director Nayvis D\u00edaz Labaut <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redsemlac-cuba.net\/redsemlac\/economia\/velo-cuba-emprender-desde-la-responsabilidad-social\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SEMLAC at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the idea of substituting imports, D\u00edaz Labaut assured last year that she was researching with specialists from the Cienfuegos Botanical Garden to find out the type of bamboo that each part used, while they connected with people in Pinar del R\u00edo who would prepare a natural resin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe jute we are going to use is from Granma; we are going to replace the fiberglass with another produced in the country,\u201d she pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/eco-friendly-bamboo-bicycles-hit-streets-cuba-2023-08-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Reuters, this idea of Velo Cuba to produce light and ecological mobility options is inserted in a program financed by the Embassy of the Netherlands.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"LsnKs0a1Vd\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/first-public-bicycle-system-station-inaugurated-in-havana\/\">First public bicycle system station inaugurated in Havana<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;First public bicycle system station inaugurated in Havana&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/first-public-bicycle-system-station-inaugurated-in-havana\/embed\/#?secret=HhKU0bge65#?secret=LsnKs0a1Vd\" data-secret=\"LsnKs0a1Vd\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the first eight built in 2022, four were donated to the Zoo in Havana\u2019s Vedado, but the exact amount developed to date is not specified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tocororo Bamboo Bikes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not the only project for this purpose. In the context of the International Crafts and Gifts Fair (Fiart 2022), Tocororo Bamboo Bikes, a project of two Iranian brothers living in Canada, signed a letter of intent with the Cuban Fund for Cultural Assets to produce vehicles with these characteristics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afshin Kalabi, one of its promoters, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.excelenciascuba.com\/tocororo-bamboo-bikes-quiere-producir-en-cuba-unas-singulares-bicicletas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pointed out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excelencias <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that they thought of the island to bring this business, \u201csince we like the country a lot.\u201d They have four models of ecological bicycles, which stand out for their resistance and low weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Fiart 2022, Tocororo Bamboo Bikes planned to create wheelchairs with Cuban bamboo for people with special abilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The crisis marches\u2026 on wheels<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passenger <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2023-07-05\/cual-es-la-situacion-actual-y-perspectiva-de-la-transportacion-de-pasajeros-en-el-pais-05-07-2023-21-07-06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transportation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is going through one of its worst moments in recent years, according to Luis Ladr\u00f3n de Guevara, a MITRANS official. If in 2017 more than two million people were transported on the island, five years later it barely exceeds a million, he pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The objective of the sector is to achieve a \u201cgradual recovery\u201d of services within three years, said Ladr\u00f3n de Guevara.
