{"id":290926,"date":"2023-10-30T19:08:25","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T23:08:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=290926"},"modified":"2023-10-30T19:21:25","modified_gmt":"2023-10-30T23:21:25","slug":"femicides-in-cuba-exceed-70-in-2023-according-to-activists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/femicides-in-cuba-exceed-70-in-2023-according-to-activists\/","title":{"rendered":"Femicides in Cuba exceed 70 in 2023, according to activists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/femicide-in-cuba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Femicides<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Cuba in 2023 have already surpassed 70, more than double those registered throughout last year (34), according to independent activists\u2019 count.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Friday the independent platform Yo S\u00ed Te Creo (YSTC) reported four new sexist murders on the island, bringing the number to 71 for the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the new victims reported is a 19-year-old girl, a recent Pedagogy graduate, allegedly murdered on October 19 at the hands of her ex-partner in Tercer Frente, in the province of Santiago de Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, Yunileidys Bravo Alonso, 39, died, allegedly seriously injured by her ex-partner on October 20 in San Agust\u00edn, Havana, and died five days after in the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, Ofelia Guill\u00e9n, 83, in an event described as \u201csexual femicide\u201d that occurred on October 23 in the city of Holgu\u00edn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSTC also reported the murder of a two-year-old girl, Kamila Melit Alonso Ocampo, in Luyan\u00f3, Havana, allegedly at the hands of her mother&#8217;s partner in a case of alleged abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FyositecreoCuba%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02oBjRwUGVvYJ9mVTHRT5egDi85ByqpiPyFjtjg7cDBKCsMSE4WStX1wx72Pfm6jFHl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"770\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three days ago, this platform and the independent media Alas Tensas confirmed two more femicides, an EFE dispatch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/spa\/cuba-violencia-machista_colectivo-feminista-eleva-a-70-los-feminicidios-en-cuba-en-2023--m%C3%A1s-del-doble-que-en-2022\/48931078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>reported<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cuban authorities do not publish updated official statistics on these events, so the work of these feminist groups and their dissemination in unofficial media has contributed to highlighting the cases of sexist murders, according to the Spanish news agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The activists insist that a \u201cstate of emergency due to gender-based violence\u201d be declared, criticize the actions of the authorities in response to these events and advocate for a comprehensive law against gender-based violence and the implementation of protocols to prevent these events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Thursday, the island\u2019s official media reported that the Cuban prosecutor\u2019s office has requested a life sentence for a man accused of killing his ex-wife and her new partner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trial is being held this week in the People\u2019s Provincial Court of Havana. The prosecution accuses him of two counts of murder and another of threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The official media have not provided information about the victims or the accused, nor have they detailed when or where the double crime occurred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel called for \u201czero tolerance\u201d for sexist violence and assured that in Cuba \u201cany criminal act\u201d and, in particular, \u201cgender-based violence\u201d is \u201cexaggerated,\u201d in his opinion for political reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Federation of Cuban Women <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuban-government-presents-observatory-on-gender-equality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>presented in June<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Cuban Observatory on Gender Equality, which includes statistics of \u201cwomen who have been victims of intentional homicide as a consequence of gender-based
