The return of festivals, concerts, exhibitions and other in-person shows, which began the previous year after the pandemic, was confirmed in the last twelve months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it was not easy. The Cuban economic crisis put a damper on the country\u2019s artistic and literary scene, both in the organization of activities and events and in the support of a public spurred by other more pressing needs and by the transportation difficulty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even so, theaters, galleries, movie theaters and other cultural spaces that have managed to continue functioning despite the shortage, opened their doors. Meanwhile, Cuban artists \u2014 no matter where they lived, whether in Havana or Madrid, in Miami or Guant\u00e1namo \u2014 continued to perform and achieve successes beyond the seas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bellow, <\/span><b>OnCuba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> proposes a look at what happened in the artistic and literary field in 2023. We do it more intending to revisit facts and figures that we believe are relevant, than trying to fully encompass that universe in constant ebullience that is Cuban culture and art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Events and visitors<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quick look at the 2023 cultural program in Cuba reveals the holding of several of the most important and usual events. The <\/span>International Book Fair<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dedicated to Colombia and the writers Araceli Garc\u00eda Carranza and Julio Travieso, toured the island after its Havana chapter; while the Casa de las Am\u00e9ricas Literary Award moved to April and once again awarded authors from the continent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Havana was once again the cultural epicenter of the country and throughout the year it hosted events such as the 27th International Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes, the 20th Havana International Theater Festival, the 25th International Crafts Fair (FIART) \u2014 dedicated to la guayabera \u2014 and the 44th <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/latin-american-film-festival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>International New Latin American Film Festival<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with some 200 films on its official billboard.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"I3GuJITLgy\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/cine\/totem-y-los-delincuentesempatan-en-corales-en-el-festival-de-la-habana\/\">\u201cTotem\u201d y \u201cLos delincuentes\u201dempatan en Corales en el Festival de La Habana<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00ab\u201cTotem\u201d y \u201cLos delincuentes\u201dempatan en Corales en el Festival de La Habana\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/cine\/totem-y-los-delincuentesempatan-en-corales-en-el-festival-de-la-habana\/embed\/#?secret=nblKTgN8vj#?secret=I3GuJITLgy\" data-secret=\"I3GuJITLgy\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the musical field it is necessary to mention the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/havana-world-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Havana World Music Festival<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with an important call; the Salsa Festival, with the best of the genre on the island and international guests; the fifth edition of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cartelera\/oferta-musical\/festival-habana-clasica-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Habana Cl\u00e1sica<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with more than 60 artists from 17 countries; and, more recently, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/eyeife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Eyeife<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> festivals, of electronic music, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/musica\/havana-rpm-una-celebracion-a-la-cubana-del-vinilo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Havana RPM<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the first dedicated to vinyl in Cuba, which brought together foreign DJs and musicians with local artists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside the capital, there was no lack of activity. Examples were the 60th edition of the legendary Pepe S\u00e1nchez Trova Festival, in Santiago de Cuba; the 42nd Caribbean Festival, also in Santiago, dedicated to Mexican celebrations of life and death; and the <\/span>30th Romer\u00edas de Mayo<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the 29th Ibero-American Culture Festival, both of which cannot be missed in Holgu\u00edn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From May 31 to June 5, Isla Verde was celebrated on the Isle of Youth. It was the first International Film and Environmental Festival of the Caribbean, chaired by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/culture\/perugorria-psychoanalyzing-ourselves-would-do-us-all-some-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Jorge Perugorr\u00eda<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The event, in conjunction with the Antonio N\u00fa\u00f1ez Jim\u00e9nez Foundation and the Isla Patrimonial project, was non-competitive and included a series of films that, as environmental education workshops, generated talks with young people and adolescents, led by scientists and biologists, among other experts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other events of relevance beyond the capital were once again the persevering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/gibara-film-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Gibara Film Festival<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the Cuban\u00eda Festival, in Bayamo; the traditional Cucalambeana Day, in Las Tunas; the Varadero Josone Festival \u2014 which this time extended its activities to Matanzas; the Chocolate con Caf\u00e9 Festival, in Guant\u00e1namo; and the debut of the Canch\u00e1nchara Festival, in the hospitable and tourist town of Trinidad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for visitors, numerous foreign artists landed on the island again this year. Although perhaps the brilliant celebrities of previous periods did not arrive this time, creators of solid work and international prestige did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among those who arrived on the island in 2023 were, along with many others, the jazz musicians Aaron Goldberg and Ted Nash, from the United States; the Spanish singer Pilar Boyero, the German flutist Michael Faust and the Venezuelan poet Gustavo Pereira.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the U.S. singers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/cantante-estadounidense-tonya-boyd-cannon-hara-presentaciones-en-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Tonya Boyd-Cannon<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/big-freedia-a-new-orleans-queen-in-havana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Big Freedia<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 the latter known as \u201cthe New Orleans queen of bounce\u201d \u2014, the French director Christophe Barratier, the Brazilian actor Jos\u00e9 de Abreu \u2014 of regular presence in his country\u2019s soap operas \u2014 and the actor Sergi L\u00f3pez, from Spain also visited Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"STV5ApPI2u\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/big-freedia-a-new-orleans-queen-in-havana\/\">Big Freedia, a New Orleans queen in Havana<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Big Freedia, a New Orleans queen in Havana&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/big-freedia-a-new-orleans-queen-in-havana\/embed\/#?secret=OzNoqkazHP#?secret=STV5ApPI2u\" data-secret=\"STV5ApPI2u\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Full showcases<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span>awards<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not necessarily the best indicator of the cultural health of a country, they are an endorsement and recognition of its artists. And 2023 was a year full of awards for Cuban creators, both on and off the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relevant figures from different manifestations, such as the actor <\/span>Aram\u00eds Delgado<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the actress Natacha D\u00edaz, the dancer and choreographer Jos\u00e9 Antonio Ch\u00e1vez, the writer Mar\u00eda Elena Llana, and the anthropologist Jes\u00fas Guanche, received the national awards for Theater, Television, Dance, Literature and Social Sciences, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also recognized were the writers Miguel Barnet (Cultural Heritage) and Enrique P\u00e9rez D\u00edaz (Editing), the political scientist and professor Rafael Hern\u00e1ndez (Cultural Research), the makeup specialist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/gente\/magaly-pompa-maquillaje-premio-nacional-de-cine-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Magaly Pompa<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Cinema), and Yanet Oviedo (Curatorship).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music had among its winners the greats <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/omara-portuondo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Omara Portuondo<\/a><\/strong>, Chucho Vald\u00e9s, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/paquito-d-rivera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paquito D\u2019Rivera<\/a><\/strong>, winners in different categories of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/latin-grammy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Latin Grammy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the recently deceased Camilo Valencia, the composer Yadam Gonz\u00e1lez and the arranger Rafael Valencia. Photo: F\u00e1brica de Arte Cubano\/FACfilms.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in 2023, Cuban-American composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/culture\/music-culture\/tania-leon-the-essence-of-a-feat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tania Le\u00f3n<\/a><\/strong> became the first woman to win the Tom\u00e1s Luis de Victoria SGAE Ibero-American Music Award. The Cuban artist Mar\u00eda Magdalena Campos-Pons, who resides in the United States, received the MacArthur scholarship awarded to people with exceptional achievements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the field of dance, among other awards, highlights include the awarding to the dancer and choreographer Carlos Acosta of the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Prix de Lausanne, in Switzerland; and the 2023 United Kingdom National Dance Award to the dancer Zeleidy Crespo, member of the Acosta Danza group. In addition, teacher Lizt Alfonso received the UNEAC National Choreography Award for her show <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habana F\u00e9nix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In literature, the Pepe Carvalho International Black Novel Award received by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/leonardo-padura\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Leonardo Padura<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, without a doubt the most international of Cuban writers today, deserves highlighting. Also, the Loewe Foundation Poetry Prize, won by the young Reiniel P\u00e9rez; the Archiletras de la Lengua, given to the writer, researcher and repentista Alexis D\u00edaz-Pimienta; and the Nicol\u00e1s del Hierro International Poetry Prize, won by the already established poet Sergio Garc\u00eda Zamora.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Cuba, for his part, the narrator from Mayar\u00ed Emerio Medina won the Julio Cort\u00e1zar Ibero-American Short Story Prize for the second time; while another consecrated person, the poet and narrator from Las Tunas, Carlos Esquivel Guerra, won the Italo Calvino Prize for novels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of cinema, the film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La mujer salvaje<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by new director Alan Gonz\u00e1lez, won awards at events such as the Havana Festival \u2014 among them, the Special Jury Coral Prize \u2014 and the Cear\u00e1 Film Festival, in Brazil. Other films awarded at different festivals were <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Espera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Daniel Ross; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Matadero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Fernando Fraguela; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El final del camino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Ariagna Fajardo; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J\u00edbaro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Osmanys S\u00e1nchez; and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El caso Padilla<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Pavel Giroud, best documentary at the Platinum Ibero-American Cinema Awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, the Havana Festival gave its Honorary Coral Prize to the great actress Eslinda N\u00fa\u00f1ez, and the Gibara Festival recognized the costume designer Violetta Cooper and the renowned actors Jorge Perugorr\u00eda and Luis Alberto Garc\u00eda with the Honorary Luc\u00eda Prize. The latter was also awarded at the PRODU Awards of Latin Television for his portrayal of the dictator Rafael Le\u00f3nidas Trujillo in the series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El grito de las mariposas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Anniversaries and departures<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, important names in Cuban culture were remembered. Several of the main tributes of the year were dedicated to figures who were born just a century ago and whose work and legacy continue to elevate them, even though they are no longer physically present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the centenaries celebrated this year are those of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/rosita-fornes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Rosita Forn\u00e9s<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the great star of Cuba, and the declaimer Luis Carbonell, the \u201cWatercolorist of Cuban Poetry.\u201d Also, those of the notable painter Servando Cabrera, the refined chronicler and humorist Enrique N\u00fa\u00f1ez Jim\u00e9nez, the scientist and writer Antonio N\u00fa\u00f1ez Jim\u00e9nez, and the poet and essayist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/fina-garcia-marruz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Fina Garc\u00eda-Marruz<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an essential name in Cuban literature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, 95 years have passed since the birth of Tom\u00e1s Guti\u00e9rrez Alea, Tit\u00f3n, one of the pillars of the seventh art on the island and whose famous film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/canaldigital\/galerias\/por-el-camino\/fresa-y-chocolate-siempre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Fresa y chocolate<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 directed together with the also deceased Juan Carlos Tab\u00edo \u2014 was released three decades ago. And the 30 years of the National Film Criticism Workshop, a must-see event for film scholars hosted by the city of Camag\u00fcey, was also commemorated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For its part, Cuban culture commemorated \u2014 both inside and outside the island \u2014 the 80th birthday of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/pablo-milanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Pablo Milan\u00e9s<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose posthumous album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amor y Salsa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the participation of numerous Cuban and international artists, was presented in 2023. Eight decades ago too Reinaldo Arenas was born, the cursed writer of \u201cCelestino ante del alba\u201d and \u201cEl mundo hallucinante,\u201d in whose honor a literary contest is held in Holgu\u00edn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/national-ballet-of-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>National Ballet of Cuba<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the emblematic group founded by Alicia Alonso, celebrated 75 years, with a day of premieres, presentations and international tours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, in the musical field, it was 60 years since the founding of the Original de Manzanillo and the death of Benny Mor\u00e9, the immortal King of Rhythm, as well as 45 years since the birth of Son 14 in Santiago de Cuba, and 20 years since the death of M\u00e1ximo Francisco Repilado, Compay Segundo, a legend of traditional Cuban music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of losses, 2023 was a hard year for the island\u2019s art and literature. A significant number of Cuban creators died in the last twelve months, some of them in the country and others outside Cuba. But regardless of the place where they lived or where they built their work, their departure is equally painful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among those who left this year are the musicians L\u00e1zaro Vald\u00e9s, Gina Le\u00f3n, Tet\u00e9 Caturla and Ireno Garc\u00eda; the writers Eduardo Heras Le\u00f3n, Ant\u00f3n Arrufat and F. The main awards and events of the year were, without a doubt, among them; But we would like to now address other events not yet reviewed in this summary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of these events were also accompanied by controversy, as happened with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/unesco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>UNESCO<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s declaration of the bolero and its spaces and social uses in Cuba and Mexico, as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The decision did justice to a genre that is pride and tradition for Cubans but caused controversy among some academics, musicians, and the public due to the shared nature of the candidacy and recognition with the Mexican nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also this year, although without background noise, UNESCO distinguished the capitular minutes of the Havana City Council (1550-1898) and the collection of Cuban film posters as Documentary Heritage of Humanity. It did so by including both sets in the international registry of the Memory of the World program. The posters, moreover, have their own center in the Cuban capital, inaugurated during the 44th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the plastic arts, successes resulted in the opening of important exhibitions outside the island, such as \u201cArquitectura de un sistema,\u201d by Michel Mirabal, exhibited during the Venice Architecture Biennale; and \u201cUn nuevo mundo,\u201d by Alexis Leyva Machado, Kcho, in the Vatican. Also, the inauguration of exhibitions in Cuba such as \u201cPaisaje interior\u201d, awarded by the Alberto Lescay National Plastic Arts Prize, in Fine Arts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On stage, it is necessary to mention the premiere by Argos Teatro of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los vecinos de arriba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a comedy by the Spanish Cesc Gay starring Laura de la Uz, <\/span>Jacqueline Arenal<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Osvaldo Doimeadi\u00f3s, Carlos Luis Gonz\u00e1lez, Eduardo Mart\u00ednez and <\/span>Caleb Casas<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 also its director \u2014, which lasted for several weeks with a full house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, productions such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frijoles colorados<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a high-quality histrionic exercise by the experienced Ver\u00f3nica Lynn and Jorge Luis de Cabo, achieved prominence; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kil\u00f3metro Cero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which approaches the topic of male prostitution and recently won one of the Villanueva Awards; and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Zapatera Prodigiosa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by the El P\u00fablico theater company, which remained on the billboard for almost the entire year and closed a long season \u2015 which began at the end of 2022 \u2015 of more than a hundred performances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuban literature had among its stellar moments the talk shared by Leonardo Padura with the Peruvian Nobel Prize for Literature Mario Vargas Llosa, during the second Escribidores Literary Festival of America and Europe, in Malaga. And also the recognition of Nancy Morej\u00f3n by the Cervantes Institute, in whose \u201cCaja de las letras\u201d several personal items of the Cuban poet were kept this year, among them a seashell that accompanied her \u201call her life,\u201d some books and magazines, a notebook, and a watercolor drawn by her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music, for its part, experienced events such as the performances of S\u00edntesis, X and Eme Alfonso with their<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ancestros Sinf\u00f3nico<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the National Theater, <\/span>the concert with sui generis versions<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of music such as that of the film trilogy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lord of the Rings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as part of the British Culture Week in Cuba, and the return to the Cuban stage, after six years of absence, of the great singer-songwriter <\/span>Pedro Luis Ferrer<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The creator of memorable songs such as \u201cMariposa,\u201d \u201cInseminaci\u00f3n artificial\u201d and \u201cC\u00f3mo me gusta hablar espa\u00f1ol,\u201d starred in a double function at the Bellas Artes theater, after the controversy unleashed by the invitations distributed by the cultural authorities \u2015 to the detriment of ticket sales \u2014 for the initially announced one-off concert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the cinematographic field, we cannot forget the screening of the film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Landri\u00e1n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/culture\/cinema\/ernesto-daranas-censorship-is-an-act-of-abuse-of-power-of-ignorance-of-arrogance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Ernesto Daranas<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and dedicated to the notable \u2014 and censored for years \u2014 Cuban documentary filmmaker Nicol\u00e1s Guill\u00e9n Landri\u00e1n, during the Venice International Film Festival, one of the great events of world cinema; and the Havana Film Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, a controversy reactivated the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/cine\/nuestro-cine-sera-libre-o-no-sera-que-es-la-asamblea-de-cineastas-cubanos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Assembly of Cuban Filmmakers<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The censorship of the documentary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Habana de Fito<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Juan Pin Vilar \u2014 along with other independent works \u2014 and its subsequent broadcast on Cuban television in a non-final version and without the authorization of the filmmakers, were the triggers for the call launched by the group, made up of Cuban filmmakers from inside and outside the island; among them, heavyweights such as directors Fernando P\u00e9rez, Ernesto Daranas and Rebeca Ch\u00e1vez, screenwriter <\/span>Senel Paz<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, critic Gustavo Arcos and actor Luis Alberto Garc\u00eda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group, which defends transnational, free and diverse cinema, as well as the right of artists \u201cto interpret and question their environment,\u201d has publicly shown its opposition to censorship and other practices of cultural institutions. Furthermore, it has advocated for dialogue and has addressed the authorities with considerations and proposals, while at the same time expressing itself without restrictions on events such as the exclusion of Cuban documentaries from the Havana Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the government created a temporary group for cinema, which has not responded to the demands of the Assembly, and has met with filmmakers, including members of the independent group. In addition, it appointed journalist and promoter Alexis Triana as the new director of ICAIC, whose election was questioned by the Assembly, more for the \u201cmethod\u201d of his election and
