{"id":295395,"date":"2024-01-26T17:15:03","date_gmt":"2024-01-26T22:15:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=295395"},"modified":"2024-01-26T17:15:03","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T22:15:03","slug":"aaron-goldberg-on-cuba-u-s-exchanges-learning-and-exploring-our-common-language-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/culture\/music-culture\/aaron-goldberg-on-cuba-u-s-exchanges-learning-and-exploring-our-common-language-together\/","title":{"rendered":"Aaron Goldberg on Cuba-U.S. exchanges: \u201cLearning and exploring our common language together\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the figures of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/cuban-jazz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>jazz<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0piano on the U.S. scene, Aaron Goldberg, joined the calls for greater exchange between Cuba and the United States, at a time when the thaw does not seem to appear on the horizon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The objective of such bridges would be \u201cto learn and explore our common language together,\u201d said the instrumentalist originally from Boston in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prensa-latina.cu\/2024\/01\/24\/pianista-aaron-goldberg-pondera-puentes-culturales-entre-cuba-y-ee-uu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>an interview<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the Prensa Latina (PL) news agency in Havana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goldberg is one of the stars invited to the 39th edition of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/cuban-jazz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Jazz Plaza<\/b> <b>Festival<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where he left a testimony of his talent with a brilliant concert this Tuesday at the Sala Avellaneda of the National Theater. There he was escorted by two luminaries of Cuban music: bassist Jorge Reyes and percussionist Oliver Vald\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FReuters%2Fvideos%2F1772187256626457%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Cuba in Goldberg<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaborator with stellar musicians such as Joshua Redman, Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Guillermo Klein, the U.S. pianist is not unknown in the island\u2019s gray jazz scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEspecially in jazz, artists from both countries learned from each other. Therefore, we have to protect and expand this connection. I had a lot of fun last year, it was my second time coming to the island. The first was in 2006,\u201d commented Goldberg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artist recalled that visit and his experience with Cuban trumpet player Yasek Manzano in La Zorra y el Cuervo, the cult temple of Havana jazz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On that occasion, Goldberg discovered that, in addition to folk or classical music, jazz has a lot of strength and creativity on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presentation with Manzano was a miscellany of authors and genres. Goldberg added to his own pieces works by his compatriot Thelonious Monk, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and songs by Pablo Milan\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea of incorporating those renowned compositions allowed, in his opinion, improvisation, discovery and adventure on stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBefore coming to the largest of the Caribbean islands, I already knew about the mastery of Cuban jazz players like Chucho Vald\u00e9s or Gonzalo Rubalcaba,\u201d said the pianist in dialogue with PL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023 he repeated his visit. He then performed alongside Cuban-American pianist Dayramir Gonz\u00e1lez, who resides in New York, where his virtuosity is followed at every performance by a tribe of admirers.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Turning Point\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8ltzmVF2twc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The author of albums such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turning Point<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1999), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfolding<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2000), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2010) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Edge of the World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2018), among others, says he is impressed with \u201cthe quality of public music education, in conservatories such as Amadeo Rold\u00e1n, the National School of Art and the University of the Arts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his tours of such academies, he was so impressed that he dreams that his country &#8220;can imitate or learn from the system in terms of musical education, since here everyone plays an instrument, dances and enjoys that art.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A crucial discovery as a teenager<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Won over by jazz since high school, at age 16 he began studying with saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor me, jazz was a very big discovery and I never imagined that it would later be the protagonist of my career. Photo: Jack Vartoogian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Globetrotter and polyglot<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also a graduate of Harvard University and a founding member of Carter\u2019s Jazz Ahead during his university years, Aaron Goldberg is an inveterate traveler, which has turned him into \u201ca citizen of the world,\u201d who sniffs out the cultures he passes through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGoldberg doesn\u2019t teach much these days (he\u2019s on the road too often), but when he was young he benefited from helpful instructors and likes to give it back,\u201d said Matthew Kassel in the prestigious U.S. magazine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/downbeat.com\/news\/detail\/aaron-goldberg-is-between-two-worlds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Down Beat<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founded in 1934.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt should come as no surprise to those who have followed Goldberg\u2019s distinguished career over the past two decades that he is also fluent in several languages outside of jazz. A kind of scholar,\u201d Kassel added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The journalist and critic praised the quality of his latest trio album<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, At the Edge Of the World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Sunnyside), his first in four years.
