There were just two questions: Had Beyonc\u00e9 and Jay-Z traveled to Cuba under the radar to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary? Or, on the contrary, had they asked for the corresponding license to go to that nearby but at the same time distant forbidden fruit? The initial position of the White House was to open a waiting period until there was an official statement from the Treasury Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Cuban-American congresspeople sent a public letter to Adam J. Szubin, director of the Treasury Department\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control, questioning the legality\/legitimacy of the trip and Obama\u2019s policy on cultural exchanges. One of them, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/article\/edc5910a97774b9b817a086db19f9070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Marco Rubio<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, returned to the fray using traditional arguments: \u201cThe Obama administration\u2019s people-to-people cultural exchange programs have been abused by tourists who have no interest in the freedoms of the Cuban people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_297290\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-297290\" style=\"width: 749px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Old-Havana-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-297290\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Old-Havana-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"749\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Old-Havana-1.png 749w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Old-Havana-1-300x170.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 749px) 100vw, 749px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-297290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In Old Havana. Photo: USA Today.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/beyonce-jay-zs-trip-cuba-legal-treasury-department\/story?id=18920026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Alastair Fitzpayne<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then assistant secretary of the Treasury Department for Legislative Affairs, let the media know that the couple had traveled to Havana on an educational license. And he clarified: \u201cAlthough parts of the visit, during which the couple celebrated their fifth anniversary, may have seemed like tourism, Jay-Z and Beyonc\u00e9 fulfilled their obligations by meeting with the children\u2019s theater group La Colmenita and visiting students and teachers of the Higher Institute of Art.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For its part, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arrangementsabroad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Academic Arrangement Abroad<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the New York entity that had organized the trip, reaffirmed it in a public statement: \u201cThe trip was organized in accordance with federal procedures established for the granting of licenses for people-to-people cultural trips. The couple did not receive any special treatment.\u201d Suddenly, someone ironically said: \u201cbut we don\u2019t get involved if they had a mojito or two.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>II<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon their arrival, perhaps Beyonc\u00e9 and Jay-Z thought that they would go unnoticed due to the impacts of an imaginary in which Cuba is perceived with its back to the sea of globalizations and as a place full of old things, from automobiles and buildings to the people who appear in mainstream media photos. Photo: CNN.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The couple of artists were immediately recognized the first night they left the hotel where they were staying, the emblematic and ill-fated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/saratoga-hotel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Saratoga<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It happened in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSBRE9340XK\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>La Guarida<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Centro Habana paladar that, as is known, served as the location for several scenes of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strawberry and Chocolate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the jet set figures such as Will Smith, Kevin Spacey, Naomi Campbell, Jodie Foster, Natalie Portman, Danny Glover and even Do\u00f1a Sof\u00eda, then queen of Spain, have also visited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lack of systematic contact with the other side usually unleashes certain presumptions that disappear like soap bubbles when certain visitors set foot on the island. In any case, the visit of Beyonc\u00e9 and Jay-Z unleashed an interesting logistical problem: the need to enlist, first at the request of the restaurant owners, and then by their own inertia, the National Revolutionary Police to reinforce the security of the mega-stars, but not for acts of repudiation of the \u201cYankee,\u201d but for those expressions of empathy that led them to appear several times on the hotel balcony, a few steps from Havana\u2019s Capitol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The couple walked through emblematic sites of Old Havana, visited the University of the Arts, Contemporary Dance of Cuba, the National Theater, the children\u2019s group La Colmenita, the House of Music in Centro Habana, and attended a presentation by Haila Mar\u00eda Mompi\u00e9 and\u2026the Gato Tuerto, where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/fallecio-la-legendaria-artista-juana-bacallao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Juana Bacallao<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was performing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>III<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They say that Beyonc\u00e9 and Jay-Z were at the Gato Tuerto bar. Suddenly, Bacallao addressed her from the stage, inviting her to come up. And in the middle of midnight, she blurted out one of her own: \u201cLet Yonse or whatever her name is come up.\u201d And when Beyonc\u00e9 began to go on stage, Juana shouted with her microphone in her hand: \u201cLeave her alone, nothing is going to happen to her. This is from panther to panther.\u201d And there they interacted. An artist who, like Fredesvinda Garc\u00eda Vald\u00e9s (Camag\u00fcey, 1935 \u2013 San Juan de Puerto Rico, 1961), that singer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/magazine-articles\/freddy-the-woman-who-cried-boleros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Freddy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> immortalized by a famous novel by Guillermo Cabrera Infante, came from the most absolutely popular subsoil.
